About the course
Vacancies for this course will re-open on Monday 4th March 2019.
Trainees will have a 10 month placement at one of our partner schools and will benefit from a contrasting experience undertaking a short-term placement at a second Gloucestershire school. Trainees are able to access both Primary Mainstream and SEN placements according to preference.
In addition to classroom practice, Trainees will attend a series of tailored training sessions, in order to develop teaching skills, subject knowledge and good practice. These sessions are facilitated by our expert practitioners, who will support trainees in achieving high quality professional practice. Our training programme is reviewed annually and developed to ensure that Trainees are fully equipped to embark on their future career. Our 2018-19 programme includes the following modules:
- Resilience, Wellbeing and Mental Health for Staff
- Child Welfare, Children's Mental Health
- SEND and Autism
- Dealing with difficult conversations
- Working as part of a team/ Working with Stakeholders
- Core Skills - Numeracy and Phonics
- Behaviour for Learning and Learning Styles
- Sensory Learning and Sensory Stories
- Speech, Language and Communication Development
- Portfolio Building, Peer Mentoring and Next Steps
- Writing, Reading and Children's Literature
- Child Development and Neuroscience Physical Disabilities
- CVs, Job Applications and Preparing for Interviews
- EAL and Parental Engagement
- Using Topic Based Approach
- Outdoor Learning
In addition to visiting partner schools and attending programme modules, Trainees will attend sessions run by The University of Gloucestershire.
Trainees are assigned a mentor at their placement school and are also supported by the ITT training manager throughout the programme.
Assessment is achieved through production of a professional portfolio, which will be used to build evidence of how the standards for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) are being met. Evidence will include observations of Trainee teaching and written assignments, which should demonstrate a clear understanding of professional practice, phase and subject area. The expectation of time spent leading a class will increase in each successive term of the programme as Trainees develop in their skills and confidence, leading up to 80%.
All CHM Teaching School Alliance 2017-18 Trainees were successful in securing an NQT placement (September 2018 start) by the end of the programme.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview which takes place over a day. During this day you will:
- spend time in a class
- deliver a presentation on a topic which you will be notified of and have opportunity to prepare for in advance
- have a formal interview with a panel of interviewers (consisting of Teaching School Lead and 2 other members of SLT from the Teaching School Alliance)
- complete literacy and numeracy tests (these are supplementary to the Professional Skills Tests)
How school placements work
Trainees will be offered placements in one of our placement schools as part of their training programme. Recent placement schools are:
- The Milestone School
- Coney Hill Community Primary School
- Abbeymead Primary School
- Hill View Primary School
- Gotherington Primary School
- Innsworth Juniors School
- Finlay Community Primary School
- Alderman Knight
- The Shrubberies
Placements schools are reviewed annually, and where possible selected in conjunction with the Trainee. Trainees are expected to spend most of their time in their placement school, with the exception of attending Training Programme days and visits to other schools. During the programme Trainees need to undertake assessed placements in both KS1 and KS2 - to ensure a range of experience these placements must take place in a different school.
Current trainees (2018-2019) are paid Unqualified Teacher Scale 1.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
- hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs at level C or above including English, Maths and Science
- have a Degree at 2:2 or above
- have passed your English and Maths Profession Skills tests.
Please note: If you don’t have GCSE English Language, Mathematics or Science, you must obtain GCSEs (or nationally recognised equivalent qualification) in these subjects and need to show on your application that you will obtain these qualifications before the course begins in September.

- demonstrate commitment to your own professional development and to achieving high standards in teaching and learning
- be committed to ensuring the best possible outcomes for all pupils
Your application should include examples of experience you have of working with young people – for example as a classroom assistant, youth worker, or as a volunteer in a school.
If you have not had previous experience of working with young people, you should be able to demonstrate how skills you have developed in other contexts would transfer to teaching and have a positive impact on pupil outcomes.
All applicants must complete a 10 day School Experience Programme.
About the training provider
The Gloucestershire-based Coney Hill Milestone (CHM) Teaching School Alliance was designated in February 2015, with Coney Hill Primary School and The Milestone Community Special School as lead schools. CHM is uniquely placed to offer a wide range of specialist support, advice and courses, with a strong emphasis on all aspects of Primary and Special Educational Needs expertise.
We are committed to developing child-centred teachers who create the best possible outcomes for all pupils regardless of ability, need or circumstance.
We provide a structured training programme delivered by knowledgeable and experienced tutors. In additional to formal training modules we offer the opportunity to visit a wide variety of mainstream primary and SEN settings to carry out Learning Walks and observations. You will also be able to access both Primary Mainstream and SEN placements.
Throughout you will be supported by experienced mentors who will help you develop your professional practice, ensuring that you are fully equipped to embark on your future career.
All 2017-18 trainees were successful in securing an NQT placement (September 2018 start) by the end of the programme.
