About the course

The Primary SCITT 5-11 course provides a broad range of teaching experience across Key Stages 1 and 2. As with the 3-7 and 7-11 courses, you’ll develop the skills to teach any Primary age group once you’re qualified, but this course will give you the opportunity to experience teaching within the different Key Stages during your placements.

In the Primary year groups, creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

Interview process

Our interviews are held in Red Kite partnership schools. The interviews are conducted by representatives from Red Kite Teacher Training and the partnership school.

The interview will consist of the following:

  • Activity with pupils
  • Formal interview
  • Written English test – piece of writing to assess written fluency and spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • KS2 Maths test
  • Opportunity to meet current trainees
  • Opportunity to meet course leaders and ask questions about the training

You will only be asked to attend one selection day and candidates are informed of the outcome within 48 hours.

How school placements work

When allocating main placements, we consider trainee preferences, transport and location.

Our school placements take place in 45 schools across Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton.

All trainees undertake two main placements. The first placement runs from the first day of the Autumn Term until December. The second placement, in a contrasting school environment, runs from January until late June.

Trainees will also take part in mini placements across the year, which give trainees a unique opportunity to broaden their experience in a range of schools and contexts.

Fees

The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
Student type Fees to pay
UK students £9,250
EU students £9,250

We are unable to sponsor Tier 2 visas.

Financial support

You may be eligible for a loan while you study.

Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.

Financial support from the training provider

Many Trainees apply for student finance in order to pay their fees with a Tuition Fee Loan and have access to Maintenance Loan. Additional financial support if you’re a parent or have a disability.

About the training provider

Red Kite Teacher Training is a partnership of around 60 Primary, Secondary and Special schools based in and around Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton.

We tailor our School Centred Initial Teacher Training courses to individual needs so even though our Trainees are in the classroom from day one, they will only be teaching when they and their progress leader feel you are ready to do so. This approach gives our Trainees the best possible start to their teaching career. By being part of your placement school from day one they will be viewed as a colleague rather than a student during their placements.

Our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recommended by Red Kite and a PGCE (worth 60 masters credits) awarded by the University of Leeds. All our Trainees have access to student facilities and support at the University of Leeds, including sports facilities, accommodation services, learning resources and student support services.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Red Kite Teacher Training is committed to equal opportunities for staff, trainees and prospective Trainees in its admissions, in all aspects of teaching and assessment and in its provision of trainee services.

If you have a disability or special need please contact us at your earliest opportunity so we can discuss your requirements and ensure we allocate appropriate placement schools or make arrangements where necessary.

Every year we train a number of Trainees with special needs such as dyslexia and we have strategies in place to support these Trainees alongside a SEND and Wellness Lead who will offer additional support when required.
