About the course
The RE course aims to give trainees the skills they need to teach RE in our diverse, multicultural society. Due to the schools based nature of the course, our trainees work with many outstanding teachers across the alliance which means they can see first-hand how theoretical strategies, on areas such as questioning or differentiation, look in the classroom.
The course is delivered in a practical, hands-on way with the aim of continuously improving RE subject knowledge. The course reflects on ways in which RE can contribute to the spiritual moral, social and cultural development of students as well as looking at the key issues and dilemmas that may arise in the RE classroom.
The course will also give trainees the opportunity to delve into the historical developments in subject and realise the importance of both statutory requirements and non - statutory documentation for teaching RE today. Trainees will also look at different approaches to RE subject pedagogy and critically evaluate the pedagogical choices they make regarding their teaching practice. The course will also look at the progression from KS2 to KS3 in RE as well as looking forward to teaching A Level.
Trainees are taught the knowledge and skills to meet the Teachers’ Standards by working with outstanding practising teachers. Our active sessions model effective teaching so Trainees gain practical advice not just the underpinning theory.
Our high level of collaboration between our schools supports communication, transition between placements and networking for job opportunities. Our bespoke training and very high levels of support help them to make rapid progress and to develop confidence.
Trainees spend approximately 130 days in schools, dependent on their chosen course. Most of their time is spent in contrasting main placement schools and a variety of mini placements during which they learn about national priority areas and benefit from seeing leading practice in action.
Our cohesive course enables Trainees to work “smartly” e.g. 3 or 4 academic assignments draw on practical work in schools, all handed in straight after school holidays and all completed by Easter so they can focus on teaching.
Our interviews are all held in Red Kite partnership schools. You will be interviewed by a panel School Leaders and RKTT course directors.
The interview will consist of all or some of the following:
• Activity with pupils
• Formal interview
• Written English test – piece of writing to assess written fluency and spelling, punctuation and grammar
• Workload prioritisation activity
• Opportunity to meet current trainees
• Opportunity to meet course leaders and ask questions about the training
You will only be asked to attend one selection day and candidates are informed of the outcome within 48 hours.
How school placements work
Our school placements take place in 15 schools across Leeds, Harrogate and South Craven. All trainees undertake two main placements of approximately 60 days each. The first placement runs from the first day of the Autumn Term until January. The second placement, in a contrasting school environment, runs from February until late June. Trainees will also take part in four mini placements, which give trainees a unique opportunity to broaden their experience in a range of schools and contexts.
When allocating main placements, we take into account trainee preferences, transport and location.

You’ll get a bursary of £9,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.

Financial support from the training provider
Many Trainees choose to apply for student finance is order to pay their fees with a tuition fee loan.
Those who are eligible for a bursary can choose to use their bursary to pay in monthly instalments of £925 from October to July.

• Applicants should be qualified to degree level, 2:2 or above (or in their final year of University with a predicated 2:2 or above).
• Secondary applicants should have a degree relevant to the subject they want to teach. We consider related A-Level qualifications where your degree is not directly related for our Maths and Physics courses.
• All applicants are required to have a GCSE/O'level/iGCSE* at grade C/4 or above in Maths and English.

Admission is dependent upon satisfactory medical examination: relevant forms are issued to trainees accepted for the course
Candidates who are offered a place on the course are required to complete a declaration regarding any criminal convictions.
Candidates are required to obtain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) regarding their suitability for work involving children. Successful candidates will be given instructions about obtaining this when they are offered a place.
About the training provider
Red Kite Teacher Training is a partnership of around 40 Primary, Secondary and Special schools based in and around Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton.
We tailor our School Centred Initial Teacher Training courses to individual needs so even though our Trainees are in the classroom from day one, they will only be teaching when they and their progress leader feel you are ready to do so. This approach gives our Trainees the best possible start to their teaching career. By being part of your placement school from day one they will be viewed as a colleague rather than a student during their placements.
Our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recommended by Red Kite and a PGCE (worth 60 masters credits) awarded by the University of Leeds. All our Trainees have access to student facilities and support at the University of Leeds, including sports facilities, accommodation services, learning resources and student support services.
