About the course
Throughout the course you will gain comprehensive knowledge of the core subjects (English, Maths and Science) and the full breadth of National Curriculum subjects across the full Primary age range whilst specialising in the 7-11 age range. Creativity is at the heart of what we do and our taught programme models inspirational and innovative techniques for enthusing and engaging young people.
You will gain a deep understanding of issues related to Early Years provision and practice, as well as themes such as inclusion, how young people learn, behaviour management, and assessment as well as a critical understanding of educational policy.
The programme is structured in phases (introductory, developmental and consolidation) and within each phase you will increase your teaching commitment and gather evidence against the Teachers' Standards to enable you to critically reflect upon your learning, the learning of the pupils in your class and make effective links with curriculum and pedagogy through relating theory to practice.
Trainees are taught the knowledge and skills to meet the Teachers’ Standards by working with outstanding practising teachers. Our active sessions model effective teaching so Trainees gain practical advice not just the underpinning theory.
Our high level of collaboration between our schools supports communication, transition between placements and networking for job opportunities. Our bespoke training and very high levels of support help them to make rapid progress and to develop confidence.
Trainees spend approximately 130 days in schools, dependent on their chosen course. Most of their time is spent in contrasting main placement schools and a variety of mini placements during which they learn about national priority areas and benefit from seeing leading practice in action.
Our cohesive course enables Trainees to work “smartly” e.g. 3 or 4 academic assignments draw on practical work in schools, all handed in straight after school holidays and all completed by Easter so they can focus on teaching.
Our interviews are all held in Red Kite partnership schools. You will be interviewed by a panel School Leaders and RKTT course directors.
The interview will consist of all or some of the following:
• Activity with pupils
• Formal interview
• Written English test – piece of writing to assess written fluency and spelling, punctuation and grammar
• Primary only – Maths test (KS2 equivalent)
• Opportunity to meet current trainees
• Opportunity to meet course leaders and ask questions about the training
You will only be asked to attend one selection day and candidates are informed of the outcome within 48 hours.
How school placements work
Our school placements take place in schools across Leeds, Harrogate and South Craven, we currently have around 50 primary partner schools.
Primary placements start on the first day of the Autumn Term.
Our Primary course placement begins at your home school where you will gradually build up the amount of time that you teach. In January you move to your second placement school and experience a contrasting environment.
In March you will return to your home school to teach a different class.
You will also take part in 5 mini placements, which will give you a unique opportunity to broaden your experience in a range of schools and contexts.

Financial support from the training provider
Many Trainees choose to apply for student finance is order to pay their fees with a tuition fee loan.
Those who are eligible for a bursary can choose to use their bursary to pay in monthly instalments of £925 from October to July.

• Applicants should be qualified to degree level, a 2:2 or above (or in their final year of University with a 2:2 or above as a predicted grade).
• All degree disciplines will be considered for Primary applications.
• All applicants are required to have a GCSE/O'level/iGCSE* at grade C/4 or above in Maths and English.
• Primary applicants also need a GCSE/O'level/iGCSE* at grade C/4 or above in Science.

Admission is dependent upon satisfactory medical examination: relevant forms are issued to trainees accepted for the course
Candidates who are offered a place on the course are required to complete a declaration regarding any criminal convictions.
Candidates are required to obtain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) regarding their suitability for work involving children. Successful candidates will be given instructions about obtaining this when they are offered a place.
About the training provider
Red Kite Teacher Training is a partnership of around 40 Primary, Secondary and Special schools based in and around Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton.
We tailor our School Centred Initial Teacher Training courses to individual needs so even though our Trainees are in the classroom from day one, they will only be teaching when they and their progress leader feel you are ready to do so. This approach gives our Trainees the best possible start to their teaching career. By being part of your placement school from day one they will be viewed as a colleague rather than a student during their placements.
Our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recommended by Red Kite and a PGCE (worth 60 masters credits) awarded by the University of Leeds. All our Trainees have access to student facilities and support at the University of Leeds, including sports facilities, accommodation services, learning resources and student support services.
