Secondary Modern Foreign Languages - (Age Range 11 - 16)
There has never been a greater demand for linguists in our global community than in the present climate. Creating linguists of the future who will lead industry, nurture diplomatic links between countries and help everyone to understand the wider world in which we live and work is an exciting and highly rewarding challenge that you can be a part of. Imparting knowledge of a foreign language is only one part of the role of the secondary languages teacher however and anyone who hopes to enthuse our young learners in the MFL classroom will also need to introduce them to the culture and the people, whether through highly-engaging classroom activities, projects or even trips abroad. Our goal is to create life-long language learners whose passion matches that of their teachers as a healthy curiosity in the world beyond their front door is the greatest gift that we can give our younger generation. The moment you realise that a child is "hooked" on your subject and they want to use their languages to make friends, travel or work abroad is one of the most fulfilling experiences any MFL teacher can experience Through developing skills in a highly-experienced and supportive department such as ours, we are confident that this is something we can offer our trainee teachers.
This course will allow you to achieve QTS and PGCE qualification at the end of a two-year period. You will be expected to work 3 days a week, which comprises of days in school, professional study sessions and self-directed study time. You will spend a minimum 140 days in school over two years. Mondays are mandatory and will be mainly professional study days whilst there is some flexibility with the other 2 days. Haybridge SCITT will recommend QTS and Birmingham City University will award PGCE upon successful completion of 3 assignments taken over the two years. Professional study sessions will be mainly in Haybridge Alliance SCITT with the occasional session at Birmingham City University
This flexible approach means you can fit training to become a qualified teacher around other commitments, offering a more gradual introduction into the profession. You will still benefit from excellent professional study sessions and receive a high quality entitlement of provision. You will be working towards the teacher standards and will gain QTS and PGCE at the end of the training period.
During the day, we assess different skills via various tasks. Skills assessed through individual tasks:
Time management and organisation
Interaction with students
Resilience and flexibility
Skills graded 1, 2, 3 or 4 with 1 being the highest. Scores examined as part of the decision process and used to identify areas where candidates offered a place may need additional support.
Formal interview with SCITT Director/Assistant Director
To evaluate applicants' rationale for wanting to become a teacher and suitability to carry out the role.
Skills being assessed: resilience/flexibility/articulacy/core skills.
Applicants to prepare and deliver 30 minute activity on a specific topic with a group of students. This activity will evaluate applicants' ability to facilitate students' interaction with them and each other.

Subject knowledge interview
Focuses on applicants' subject knowledge together with ability to engage and inspire.

To undertake ten minute presentation with member of Senior Leadership Team on subject of “what makes an outstanding Teacher?”
Skills being assessed: time management/organisation/articulacy/core skills.
Applicants' opportunity to observe a subject specific lesson and gain insightful knowledge about teaching techniques.
Skills being assessed: interaction with students/articulacy.
Based upon lesson observation to assess applicants' literacy skills and ability to process, synthesise and evaluate information.
Skills being assessed: time management/articulacy/core skills.
To assess applicants’ numeracy skills and ability to process, synthesise and evaluate information.

How school placements work
You will undertake a placement during the Autumn and Summer terms in one of our partner schools. Your second placement will take place in the Spring term and will be in a contrasting school to your first placement. You will gain experience of working with a range of young people with differing backgrounds, abilities and needs. You will have a professional mentor as well as a school mentor in each placement school.
Most subjects involve teaching across the 11-16 age range and trainees will gain experience of teaching across Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Other experiences include a three day placement in a primary school and one day placements in a special school, a school deemed to require improvement and a school that offers alternative provision. Trainees will also gain experience of working with young people for whom English is an additional language.
Business Studies and Psychology involve teaching across the 14-19 age range and trainees will gain experience of teaching across Key Stage 4 and 5. Other experiences include a three day placement in a Higher Education setting and one day placements in a primary school, special school, a school deemed to require improvement and a school that offers alternative provision. Trainees will also gain experience of working with young people for whom English is an additional language.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
Tuition fees are £9250 and you can apply for a loan to cover these fees and/or a means tested maintenance grant via the Student Loan Company.

You’ll get a bursary of £26,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

All applicants are required to hold a UK undergraduate degree or recognised equivalent qualification normally with a degree classification of 2.2 or higher. For secondary applicants this must be in, or closely related to, your proposed teaching subject. We expect to see at least 50% of your first degree relevant to the National Curriculum subject you intend to teach.
GCSE grade C/4 or above in English/Mathematics for secondary applicants.
GCSE grade C/4 or above in English/Mathematics/Science for primary applicants
Where required GCSE qualification or NARIC equivalence is not held, candidates must undertake equivalence testing
The SCITT Training Programme focuses on developing teaching skills. You should have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach before you start training and have clear potential to become a teacher. High levels of resilience and self discipline are of paramount importance for successful completion of the programme. If your degree subject does not link closely to your chosen teaching subject, you may be required to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course before you begin your training year.
A minimum of one week of experience of working, or undertaking placement or purposeful voluntary experience in a school setting, is recommended for those applying for ITT places.
If you studied outside of the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree. You will also need to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct from the country or countries that they have lived in for the past five years in order to satisfy the DBS checks.
About the training provider
Haybridge Alliance School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is based at Haybridge High School and Sixth Form and is recognised as providing exceptional teaching and learning with vast experience in delivering and supporting Initial Teacher training (ITT) courses and placements.
Haybridge High School is a well-regarded 11-18 comprehensive school with a track record for excellence including four consecutive Ofsted ratings of ‘Outstanding’. Our Alliance schools are from a range of phases operating within diverse catchment areas with different challenges.
Haybridge Alliance SCITT is the lead provider coordinating the SCITT programme and overall training experience. All secondary and primary schools in the Alliance will provide school-based placements for the training year recruited.
The quality of the programmes together with the support received by our trainees ensures that a high calibre of newly qualified teachers enter the profession.
Throughout the duration of the course a weekly programme of professional studies workshops are delivered by practising teachers from across the schools in the partnership. The focus of the programme is to address the development needs of the next cohort of teachers who will teach in our schools. A programme of subject studies is also provided and is delivered by Birmingham City University and local Specialist Leaders in Education. These sessions are designed to develop the understanding and delivery of a subject pedagogy, reviewing topics such as lesson planning and assessment. This stimulating programme of professional and subject studies explores the philosophy of education and the pedagogy associated with the teaching of a subject.

Accommodation is not available through the Haybridge Alliance SCITT and trainees will be expected to find their own accommodation for the duration of the course.
