About the course
Secondary Music (Age Range 11 – 16)
Music has the power to transform lives and bring awe and wonder to students. The course is designed to develop outstanding teachers who can bring the subject to life and inspire their pupils.
Trainee teachers will develop understanding, knowledge and skills to deliver music as an art form; making the subject accessible for all. The course will help you develop your teaching of performing, composing and listening across the 11-18 age range. It will encourage you to plan effective lessons and communicate musical concepts effectively, reflect on and refine your classroom practice, and help you define what progress means in music education.
The secondary programme here at Haybridge will lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). QTS is awarded by Haybridge Alliance SCITT and involves you gathering evidence against each of the Teacher Standards. Trainees will spend a minimum of 120 days in school working towards the award of QTS. The PGCE is awarded by Birmingham City University (BCU) and involves the completion of three assignments that you will spend approximately 12 days throughout the programme at BCU planning and preparing for. These days are a combination of Subject Pedagogy Sessions and assignment launches.

High levels of resilience and self discipline are of paramount importance for successful completion of the programme. If your degree subject does not link closely to your chosen teaching subject, you may be required to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course before you begin your training year.
Other requirements
A minimum of one week of experience of working, or undertaking placement or purposeful voluntary experience in a school setting, is recommended for those applying for ITT places.
International
If you studied outside of the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree. You will also need to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct from the country or countries that they have lived in for the past five years in order to satisfy the DBS checks.
