About the course
Our course starts with an exciting pre-course induction week in July. This is designed to introduce you to the course, the SCITT team and your journey to becoming a teacher. We also run a range of team building activities which enable you to get to know your fellow trainees. In 2018, one of our trainees said "it was not only immensely useful and insightful but also fun! It created the perfect environment to build a rapport with my fellow trainees.”
The year officially begins in September with one week of central whole-cohort sessions. After this trainees begin a four-week induction period in their main placement school, which is designed to immerse trainees in all aspects of the placement school and teaching. You will meet and be guided by your personal mentor to observe excellent practice and begin to get involved with teaching. You will attend central professional studies and subject studies sessions to equip you with the essential skills that teaching your subject and managing your classroom requires.
At the heart of our SCITT programme is hands-on experience in schools and classrooms. Following this induction period, you will deliver 6 solo and 6 collaborative lessons during the first term. This increases incrementally throughout the year up to 15 lessons by the final term allowing you to develop in confidence and competence. You will be supported along the way by inspirational classroom practitioners, course leaders and mentors.
You will have a personalised timetable that allows you to develop the necessary skills to become a teacher to students with a range of different needs and abilities. Your timetable will also include a second placement of around 7 weeks at a contrasting school so that you can experience a variety of pupils and classrooms. The support network that you have at your main school is mirrored whilst you are on your second placement.
We firmly believe that the most effective teachers are reflective teachers. You will reflect on your practice throughout the programme and in addition you will complete periodic reviews to critically analyse your progress and practice at set points during the year. You will visit a wide range of schools across our partnership and reflect on your experiences there. You will collect evidence throughout the year to meet all of the Teachers’ Standards. You will complete assignments towards your PGCE qualification which are delivered and awarded by the University of Worcester.
We run a range of information days at our all of our partner institutions and offer first-hand experience through the School Experience Programme (SEP). Applicants are more than welcome to visit our schools before applying.
The assessment day usually takes place in the SCITT partner school you have applied to. The assessment day will consist of a number of different elements which will allow us to assess whether you have the key attributes to become a trainee at Barr Beacon SCITT. During the assessment day you will complete:
- A Subject Knowledge Assessment which is a 60-minute test of your subject knowledge and a 15-minute test of the quality of your written English.
- A Teaching Episode, during which you will teach a short 15-minute lesson in your subject to a small group of pupils.
- A Presentation on Teaching Pedagogy which is a 5-minute pre-prepared presentation on a given topic with a short Q&A session.
- An Interview which includes all aspects of becoming a teacher. There is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
You will be judged against the following set of criteria:
- Appropriateness of subject qualifications and relevance to subject teaching
- Capacity to extend subject knowledge
- Awareness of the role and responsibilities of a teacher
- Teaching/School experience
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Enthusiasm for, and commitment to, teaching
- Awareness of personal strengths and areas of development
- Awareness of the provider and our programme
How school placements work
Trainees applying to Barr Beacon SCITT select a main placement school of preference on their applications. This partner school is known as the trainee’s main placement school. Trainees can view which schools we work with and which subjects they offer here. All of our schools offer all subjects at age range 11-16 (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4), with a 16-18 (Key Stage 5) enhancement available. The only exceptions to this are our Business Studies and Psychology courses which are 14-19 (Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5).
Our trainees are based in their main placement school from September to December (Term 1) and from March to June (Term 3).
From January to March (Term 2) trainees will spend time in a contrasting school placement, sometimes referred to as 'second placement'. Arrangements for the contrasting placement school are made in a timely manner once the course has commenced. A trainee's emerging teaching strengths and areas of development, locality and personal circumstances are taken closely into consideration when making these arrangements.
Trainees are supported, developed and assessed by our trained and experienced team of Professional Mentors and Subject Mentors in the same way across all of our placement schools. In addition to the standard placement pattern, trainees also receive:
- Central, whole-cohort Professional Studies sessions and Subject Studies sessions held at Barr Beacon School
- The opportunity to observe best practice in a range of fields in a number schools through our carousel weeks
- An opportunity to observe Key Stage 2 teaching and consider the Key Stage 2 to 3 transition through a short placement in a primary school.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in German or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

We require the following qualifications for our course:
- Degree: A UK degree (or equivalent), usually an Honours degree, ideally (but not necessarily) in a subject applicable to your teaching subject. Normally a degree classification of a least a 2:2 is required
- GCSEs: Grade C or Grade 4 at GCSE (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics is essential for all applicants.

At Barr Beacon SCITT we are guided by the Department for Education’s guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2018) and all offers are subject to enhanced DBS clearance.
We have a responsibility to ensure that trainees have the health and physical capacity to teach. This will take the form of a questionnaire prior to the commencement of the course.
All trainees are subject to a prohibition to teach check, a disqualification check and a right to work check. We may contact references for further information.

Over the years we have trained more than 100 trainees in a diverse range of subjects and in 2017/2018 100% of our trainees were graded as Good or Outstanding trainees at the end of the course, recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and gained a PGCE through our partnership with the University of Worcester.
