About the course

The CLF SCITT Drama programme combines school-centred training, experience and practice with subject specific and professional development. This ensures trainees develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be outstanding teachers. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to gain Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits which is delivered in partnership with the University West of England (UWE). A QTS only route can be requested and will be considered on an individual basis.

The programme structure is layered and progressive making explicit links to the teachers standards throughout, deepening and strengthening skills and understanding. Trainees are fully integrated into school life from the start of the school year. School experience and assignments complement training enabling reflection on learning, and making links between theory and practice.

Distinctive features of the programme are:

  • August Induction:

Early induction is designed to accelerate trainees' preparedness for training and being in school. We focus on how to be a successful trainee, programme expectations and the concept of reflexivity. It is also an opportunity to develop a strong trainee community and support network for the training year.

  • Weekly Centre-based training:

Weekly subject knowledge and professional development training is led by school-based professionals and specialist leaders of education (SLEs) who are experienced and effective teachers and leaders. We use a facilitated and active learning approach where trainees experience learning techniques, engage in reflective thinking and learn collaboratively.

  • School Experience all year round:

Our trainees benefit from school-based training and practical classroom experience from the very start of the programme and throughout. Immersion into the life of the school and exposure to experienced and expert teachers ensures realistic and authentic experiences.

  • Personalisation:

We strive to provide a personalised and differentiated programme. Weekly centre-based training alongside regular school visits enables the SCITT team to identify needs and adapt the programme as necessary, using experts from across the partnership.

  • Additional CPD opportunities:

As a CLF trainee, you have access to a variety professional development opportunities across the CLF including conferences, collaboration meetings and access to the Boolean Maths Hub, this is in addition to school-based staff training.

  • Employment support:

Trainees are provided with exceptional support in securing employment. The CLF SCITT supports trainees transition into their first teaching posts, and provides a continuing network of support and ongoing training.

Interview process

The assessment day will take place at one of our partnership academies or at the CLF Institute.

Assessment day tasks will include:

  • A pre-prepared teaching task with a group of pupils
  • A short pre-prepared presentation
  • A group discussion
  • A written task based around personal reflection
  • An individual interview

This rigorous selection process ensures that we recruit the very best trainee teachers for our children and young people. During the process you will also be able to establish whether we are the right training provider for you.

Successful applicants may be given conditions or recommended actions to complete prior to the course starting in order to accelerate their readiness for the teacher training year.

How school placements work

The CLF SCITT programme has 4 blocks of teaching experience with over 130 days spent in school throughout the year. All placements take place in CLF and partnership schools in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

Throughout all teaching experience placements, trainees are allocated a mentor who provides regular guidance, support and challenge. In addition there is a Lead Mentor in school who oversees the school-based training alongside the Programme Leaders.

School Carousel:

Over the first 5 weeks of the programme, trainees embark on a carousel of school experience, visiting a different school each week. Trainees are set key tasks and observations, linked to their weekly training, to carry out in school in order to explicitly make links between theory and practice improving their understanding of how children and young people develop and learn. This provides a smooth induction to the programme and is particularly beneficial to trainees who have limited experience in school.

All trainees will have a ‘home’ placement where they spend the majority of their training year. For Secondary trainees, this takes place between January and July. The initial placement will be arranged in a contrasting school environment to the home placement and runs from October to December.

Placement expectations are designed to gradually develop trainees' teaching during the year. This starts by getting established with students in the classroom and school community as well as gaining initial teaching experience. Trainees' will start their teaching and planning with small groups, moving on to teaching parts of lessons, to whole lessons to entire sequences of learning and finally taking on full responsibility for the class and the progress of learners during the summer term. Trainees are expected to demonstrate increasing independence and autonomy in their planning and teaching throughout the year.

Secondary trainees' timetables across their placement experiences will include classes in Years 7-13. All Secondary (11-18) trainees are required to plan and teach A level; assessment of teaching is typically across Key Stages 3&4 (11-16).

Qualifications

Eligibility for the course is as follows:

  • GCSE English, Maths at Grade C/Level 4 or above (some equivalents recognised)
  • A Bachelor degree with Honours - minimum grade 2:2

You will need to show your original certificates at interview.

If your degree or eligibility qualifications are from outside the UK you should apply to NARIC to check equivalence. They will issue a statement of comparability.

Ideally the subject content of your degree and/or A levels will relate closely to the subject you wish to teach. Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are available in some subjects.

Personal qualities

You will need to demonstrate the commitment and resilience needed to become a highly effective teacher and lifelong learner.

Other requirements

You will need to complete successful enhanced Declaration and Barring Service (DBS) and prohibition checks and will require appropriate ID and documents for this.

You will be required to provide a full employment history and satisfactory references supporting your suitability to work with children/young people, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education requirements.

The selection process will include a face-to-face interview.

You will be asked to complete an Occupational Health form/self-declaration about your fitness and wellness to teach.

School experience is highly recommended to both support your application and improve your readiness for teacher training.

About the training provider

The Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) is an exciting and inspiring place to train. We are a mature Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) in the South West, with 20 entities, incorporating 8 Primary, 8 Secondary academies, an all-through 4-19 setting and a 14-19 Studio School, as well as post-16 and alternative provision in primary and secondary phases. The CLF employs around 1800 staff and we educate approximately 10,300 children and young people. Our contexts include urban, inner-city, suburban, rural and coastal catchment areas in geographically local clusters serving Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

The CLF Institute is the centre for our SCITT, Teaching School Alliance and the Boolean Maths Hub. The CLF Institute provides a continuum of professional development for staff at all career stages; from Initial Teacher Training, support for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT), recently qualified teachers, emerging leaders and researchers, middle, specialist and senior leaders, Headteachers and governors.

The CLF is sponsored by Rolls Royce PLC and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol); we work in partnership with UWE for the PGCE qualification for our SCITT trainees.

As a MAT providing 3-19 education, our trainees have opportunities for teaching within and beyond the phases/key stages that they are training to teach. There are often employment opportunities within the CLF and our partnership schools.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The CLF SCITT programme is inclusive and personalised to meet the needs of every trainee. As a schools- based provision we have access to expertise within our partnership schools around meeting all specific educational needs and can provide reasonable adjustment for disabilities. Our trainees have access to study and occupational health support as required. A characteristic of our training programme, afforded by our scale and school-centred context, is the pastoral and individual support that we can provide to ensure that every trainee's needs are met.

CLF SCITT trainees who undertake the PGCE award have access to the full range of student support provision from the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol.

CLF SCITT trainees have access to an online training package through our subscription to EduCare.

Salaried trainees employed within the CLF have access to our Employee Assistance Programme.
