About the course

Our programme prepares trainees to be outstanding teachers through a high-quality teaching and learning experience. The programme supports trainees to meet the government expectations outlined in the 2012 Teachers' Standards. Impact on pupil progress is at the heart of our programme.

Trainees will work in school alongside good and outstanding teachers four days a week and attend a professional studies day at our Kent training hub in Sidcup, Kent. Whilst we hope to hold some sessions regionally, please be prepared to travel to Kent one day a week.

Salaried trainees may have responsibility for their own class and may be expected to teach a higher percentage of the teaching timetable compared to an unsalaried trainee.

The course begins with a two-week induction programme. This provides every trainee with the knowledge and skill-base to prepare them for their placement schools, where they will observe good and outstanding practice in preparation for teaching.

Our General Professional Studies programme combines a pedagogical approach to learning with practical strategies for use in the classroom. Trainees will gain experience from practising teachers as well as specialist speakers in behaviour management, special educational needs and health and well-being.

Trainees receive one-to-one mentor support throughout their training year. Mentors carry out weekly observations and set targets to enable trainees to develop their teaching. This is documented through a weekly journal to reflect on all aspects of the programme. Trainees receive primary curriculum training sessions as well as dedicated support in maths, English and science delivered by a lead subject specialist.

Trainees are asked to submit an evidence bundle to demonstrate their progress against the Teachers' Standards. The overall quality of trainees' teaching will be judged by the impact they have had on pupil progress and learning over time.

Trainees experience a short placement of the key stages either side of their training programme and in a specialist teaching provision.

*Please note that whilst trainees will spend four days a week (Tues to Fri) in their employing school, they will be required to travel to The Atkins Training Centre in Kent once a week (Mondays) for their General Professional Studies sessions. There may be occasions whereby professional studies days will be held locally, but we cannot guarantee when and how many.

Interview process

Candidates take part in a selection and recruitment process designed to assess their suitability to train to teach.

The aim of the interview process is for candidates to demonstrate why they have chosen teaching as a career and allow us to see their potential in the classroom setting.

If successful, candidates will be made a conditional offer of a place on our programme, subject to all course requirements being met.

How school placements work

Salaried trainees are employed by their main placement school. However, trainees will complete two placements. Their main placement (A) will be where they spend the majority of their training year. The second placement (B) will be for 4-6 weeks in a contrast setting and key stage.

Our ITT Provider arrange suitable school placements for the trainees. This enables us to ensure that we offer trainees a contrasting placement and a breadth of experience in their training year. Every effort is taken to place trainees in a school geographically convenient for them, without compromising their training needs.

Our programme is full-time (term time only). Trainees spend four days a week in school and one day a week at the Atkins Training Centre in Sidcup, Kent.

Salary

Trainees on the salaried route will be paid on an unqualified teachers' pay scale 1 or 2 (discretion of the school).

The cost of the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) fee is paid for by the employing school.

The cost for the Post- Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters Credits is £2,000 and is paid by the trainee.

Please note that salaried trainees are not eligible for student finance and therefore would need to self-fund their PGCE fee.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants will need to demonstrate GCSE grade C / 4 (or standard equivalent) in mathematics, English and science.

Applicants who do not hold these qualifications will be asked to sit a GCSE equivalency test or asked for other evidence to demonstrate their ability.

Applicants must hold a degree of a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification.

Prior experience in a school is not required. However, we strongly recommend that you gain some experience to find out whether teaching is the career for you.

We are seeking well-qualified graduates who have a passion for learning and a commitment to helping children be the best that they can be.

  • British residency/EU status;
  • Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) enhanced clearance;
  • Two satisfactory references;
  • Recommended as medically fit to teach.

About the training provider

Debden Park High School is an Outstanding School within The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT). It is a School Direct Lead school providing secondary (11-16) and primary (5-11) school-based initial teacher training. Applicants can gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option to study for a PGCE with Masters' credits. Our HEI Provider responsible for the PGCE is Leeds Beckett University.

Our training is relevant and responsive to current developments in education and provides a hands­-on approach to classroom practice. We believe the best teachers are trained by outstanding practitioners.

We support trainees in finding a suitable newly qualified teaching (NQT) post. All previous trainees have gained employment.
