About the course

If you’ve got an undergraduate degree and are striving to become a secondary school Mathematics teacher, then studying our one-year PGCE Secondary Education with QTS (Mathematics) will help you on your way. You’ll develop your subject specialist knowledge alongside hands-on classroom experience. Successful completion of the course prepares you to start your first teaching year (NQT year) within a secondary school setting. Our course is designed to prepare you to teach pupils in the 11-18 age range.

The course programme is divided into two main themes:

• Initial Professional Development

You’ll have the opportunity to explore creative ways to interpret your knowledge into a language a child can understand. We help prepare you for the classroom, allowing you to develop your own thinking, teaching skills and subject curriculum knowledge to a level which you can trial in your placements. Themes include how young people learn, behaviour management, assessment, inclusion, creative and innovative teaching methods and designing learning. You will research theories of child development, gain a greater understanding of current professional issues in secondary schools and begin to develop your own educational philosophy.

• Mathematics Specialist Subject Pedagogy

We hope to change the way you think about mathematics teaching and learning, using practical and exploratory approaches in your own subject development and in your lesson planning. You’ll learn how to plan and teach interesting and creative lessons, which encourage enquiry and discussion. Sessions encourage you to unravel what shapes the positive attitudes to mathematics with the aim of helping you to become an inspirational and exceptional teacher.

You’ll learn in small, friendly and supportive groups, designed to give you the confidence to succeed. Course tutors are very experienced and you’ll have a personal academic tutor to support you through your studies. Teaching is through workshops, tutorials and lectures, some with guest speakers, and through group work.

Three of the four PGCE modules are at Master’s level and you’ll have the opportunity to continue your studies further to complete a Master’s degree, supporting your NQT year and early professional development.

Assessment is typically through the completion of a range of classroom activities, written assignments, reports, personal subject audits and the development of portfolios of evidence. There are no formal examinations and the assignments are carefully designed to help you to develop your teaching practice further. Upon successful completion of the programme we recommend Qualified Teaching Status be awarded.

Interview process

You will be shortlisted for interview based on your application. The interview process typically lasts for half a day.

The following selection procedures are designed to assess your suitability to train to teach:

• You will be asked to teach a concept from your subject area

• You will participate in a group task which is designed to investigate your understanding of teaching and learning and the role of a secondary school teacher

• You will complete a literacy task to evaluate your ability to communicate effectively

• You will also have an individual interview with a member of the course team which will include a discussion about your subject knowledge.

How school placements work

A significant amount of your learning will take place whilst on placement within our partnership schools. You will undertake at least two compulsory placements as part of your course and will spend at least 120 days in at least two schools. One of your placements will be in a 6th form college where you will teach on A level programmes.

You’ll benefit from being able to observe experienced teachers, from practical hands-on experience and from mentoring to help you develop into an outstanding and successful teacher.

You’ll experience the wider role of a teacher in secondary education. You’ll have the support of both subject and professional mentors in schools who will help you to develop your practice through observations, planning meetings, weekly tutorials, reports and in-depth lesson evaluations.

Your university tutor will visit you in school to guide, support and evaluate your progress. There is an emphasis on practical engagement with the curriculum whilst developing your understanding of the theoretical perspectives which underpin the best models of practice.

The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £22,000
  • a bursary of £20,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Qualifications

• A Honours degree (2:2 or above) with at least 50% relevant content in Mathematics. If you've got an overseas degree, we'll need a full transcript of your award and details of the marking scheme used by the awarding institution.

• GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme.

• You must have passed the skills tests in literacy and numeracy before you start the course and we ask you to register for the tests before interview.
