About the course
The School Direct route to teacher training is very similar to that of the PGCE, but with the added benefit of an additional 17 school based days, allowing students the opportunity to combine theory with practical experiences.
The year is made of a combination of approximately 17 alliance led days, 35 university based days, and a variety of placements allowing students the opportunity to experience Early Years, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, and specialist special needs education and provision.
Candidates will be expected to complete the official UCAS application form.
Successful candidates who are shortlisted will then be expected to go through a further selection process. This will include an observation, a presentation, and then a panel interview.
Candidates will be asked to carry out a short activity with a small number of children, with an English or a Maths focus. This will be observed by members of the interview panel.
Candidates will be asked to give a short presentation of approximately 10 minutes, with a teaching and learning focus, to members of the interview panel.
Candidates will finally take part in an interview with the panel, comprising approximately 10 questions, which will focus on experience, understanding of teaching and learning, awareness of the differing needs of children, and safeguarding.

How school placements work
School Direct students are rotated around our alliance schools, through their placements, to ensure a wide breadth of experience is gained across a number of settings. These placements include a 10 week GPP placement, a 2 week EYFS and SEN placement, a 5 day KS3 placement, a 2 week enquiry based placement, and a final 12 week FFP placement. We also have links with a local secondary school and a local primary special school to facilitate experiences and opportunities in these areas. Experienced mentors support the students through their placements.
Whilst on placement students are immersed in the daily life of the school, having the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of areas, including staff meetings, CPD opportunities, educational visits, and extra curricular events.

A 2:1 or above honours degree in a non-vocational subject. Vocational subjects may be considered in some circumstances.
Applicants with a 2:2 honours degree may be considered but must be able to demonstrate evidence of higher academic attainment (eg through postgraduate study).
You must also have two A-levels at grade C or above in non-vocational subjects, and a minimum grade C or 4 at GCSE (or equivalent) in English language, mathematics, and science, plus GCSE grade C in at least three other non-vocational subjects.

About the training provider
The IPLCN Inspirational, Professional, Learning Community Networkis a formal collaboration of twelve diverse schools in Rochdale and Oldham. The network includes community schools, a faith school and a special school. As a collaborative group of schools we have a long standing successful relationship with the University of Manchester and have supported the PGCE programme of ITT for many years. As a group, we are committed to providing the very best support and professional development opportunities for our staff and fully believe in ‘growing our own’. We are therefore now delighted to be able to offer bespoke Initial Teacher Training through School Direct. Whilst six of the IPLCN schools make up the Alliance, students will gain access to the diverse contexts and specialisms within all of the IPLCN schools through our tailor made programme. The IPLCN School Direct Alliance is run through Marland Hill Primary School. Our organisation provides challenge, mutual respect and positive support across the schools as we reflect, learn and develop together. Through collaboration, we exchange ideas, explore possibilities and improve from within in the spirit of trust, friendship and professionalism.
