About the course
You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.
Our mentors are outstanding and experienced teachers, and are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their skills including coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills. You will be in the safest of hands as a trainee within the Redhill Teaching School Alliance. Our in-house training is delivered by leading professionals with many years of experience of both teaching and training teachers.
A list of our partner schools is available on our website: www.redhilltsa.org.uk and we have the capacity to train over a number of subjects across these schools. Whilst we cannot guarantee a placement at a particular school, prior to interview, we will take into account particular requests.
This course leads to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. This gives you up to 60 Masters level credits and a recommendation for QTS. A Masters qualification can then be completed by undertaking subsequent assessed research with support from NTU that is designed to support your continuing professional development and to have an impact on classroom practice and pupil outcomes.
Our admissions team will conduct an initial check, to determine whether you meet the eligibility criteria. We will then consider your application, and agree whether to invite you to interview. If you are selected for interview, you will be sent information about the course and about the interview process, together with guidance on how to prepare. The interview process will take place at The Redhill Academy or one of our partner schools.
The interview will enable you to meet key staff and would usually involve a morning or afternoon. The interview would typically include a tour of the school, delivery of a 30 minute observed activity to a group of students and a subject knowledge audit task. In addition, there will be a 30 minute formal interview with members of staff from the Lead School and from the placement school. Should you be successful in your application and invited in for interview, you will be given full details of the activity task you will be required to deliver, including content/ topic and age group by email.
How school placements work
Most of your training will take place within the environment of one of our alliance schools, delivered by expert and outstanding practitioners, enhanced by attendance at our training sessions and academic sessions at NTU. You will have a main placement school to which you will be assigned from September. You will then undertake a six week second placement at one of our other alliance schools in the first half of the spring term. You will gain experience of at least two Key Stages and have full access to Nottingham Trent University facilities over the period of your training
We will carefully consider the right school for your placement, taking into account your location, your qualifications and your previous experience. We will always try to involve your prospective placement school in your interview where practical. During your training you will have the full support of the alliance SCITT co-ordinator and your training will be overseen by the Director of our Teaching School whom you will meet at interview.
The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
Trainees are charged £9,250 in tuition fees by Inspiring Leaders, the standard rate for postgraduate courses. Trainees are entitled to the same financial support as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses. Those from the UK or EU are eligible for student loans to cover tuition fees and maintenance.
Bursaries are available from the National College for Teaching and Leadership in priority subject areas; the level of the bursary is dependent on your degree level and the subject you wish to teach. You’ll get a bursary of £12,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

An honours degree or equivalent, at a minimum 2:2. Half your degree should focus on subject areas that are closely related to the subject that you wish to teach. Applicants may be considered who do not have such a strong degree match but who have other relevant qualifications (including A-level in the subject) and professional experience. Following interview, strong candidates not able to demonstrate graduate level knowledge may be offered a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course prior to commencing their teacher training year.
GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics are required for Secondary trainees.
We are looking for ambitious trainees who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject area and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities. We are looking for a sound level of subject knowledge and an ability to share this knowledge with others. Experience of working with children or young adults is ideal. Whilst there is no longer a requirement for trainees to have experience in schools prior to applying, it is useful to remember that experience observing in schools will help prospective trainees prepare for their interview and their ongoing training.
You will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly known as a Criminal Records Bureau or CRB check) and to provide information relating to Childcare Disqualification regulations.

The Redhill Academy Trust and Teaching School Alliance provide teacher training leading with QTS and PGCE across a wide variety of secondary subjects and we are especially interested in applications for Maths, English, Science, Languages and Humanities, because we have strong capacity to train in these subject areas. Our programme is accredited by Inspiring Leaders, an outstanding SCITT, based in the East Midlands.
Our teacher training offers trainees support and the opportunity to learn from classroom teachers and practitioners who are experts in their field. About the accredited body
We work in partnership with Inspiring Leaders to train outstanding teachers who make a significant difference to their pupils, their schools and their profession. Inspiring Leaders is an established and successful provider of initial teacher-training at primary and the RTSA is proud to be offering secondary training as part of their SCITT. We are also partnered with NTU to offer the PGCE element of the training. On completion of our course you will gain a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status. The majority of our former trainees have gone on to establish successful careers with many progressing successfully into leadership roles.
