About the course
Castle Newnham works in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire to provide you with a course that has a predominantly professional focus. You will undertake placements in two different schools and spend one week in a primary setting during your training. You will be supported throughout by a skilled, energetic and dedicated maths department team and an experienced mentor.
Each Friday is spent at the University of Bedfordshire alongside other PGCE students.
Interviews take place in the morning at Castle Newnham where you will get the chance to meet the Federation Principal; look around the school; observe a maths lesson and meet the staff and pupils.
In the afternoon, the interviews continue at the University of Bedfordshire.
How school placements work
Over the year you will have two placements. You will spend four days per week in your school placement and Fridays are spent at The University of Bedfordshire with other PGCE trainee teachers.
One of your placements will be at Castle Newnham School.
At Castle Newnham School, teaching staff work in primary or secondary teams. We are firmly committed to developing the skills of all our staff and we are the lead school in the training partnership (Schools Direct) with the University of Bedfordshire.
We hold weekly teaching and learning briefings to which all staff make a contribution to ensure we include evidence, research and debate in our practice
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £22,000
- a bursary of £20,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
Applicants must possess a UK 2:2 Honours degree above or equivalent. At least 50% of the content of the degree must be in the subject in which you are hoping to train.
All entrants to have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 (or GCSE A to C) in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics.
All applicants must successfully pass the NCTL pre course skills test prior to starting the course, you do not need to have passed the tests prior to attending an interview.
You need to be enthusiastic and dedicated with great subject knowledge and the ability to enthuse pupils.
