About the course
School Direct is a school-led training programme that gives you the chance to learn 'on the job' in a school.
You will work as part of the teaching team from day one, learning from experienced, practising colleagues and immediately putting new skills into practice.
Ashton Sixth Form College works with Staffordshire University delivering School Direct Teacher Training across Tameside, Derbyshire and Manchester. All of our student complete the course with a PGCE (with up to 60 master’s credits) and recommendation for QTS.
The programme will also include a small number of observational days in settings with older and younger children.
The course requires considerable time commitment, this includes all class contact, as well as independent study and preparation.
Following a successful application through UCAS Teacher Training, you will be invited to phase one of the interview process which is a formal college based interview which will include:
- Panel interview with representatives from a partner school and the Teacher Training Team
- 10 minute presentation related to the course you have applied for
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar test
- Written task related to the course you have applied for
If you are successful at phase one of the interview process, you will be invited to a phase two interview at a school within our partnership where you will be observed by a member of the teaching staff interacting with children and staff. You must be successful with both parts to be offered a place on this course.
How school placements work
Placements are carefully chosen for each student by our team. We always try to consider the location of the school, your personal circumstances and current experience level.
We have placements available in Secondary schools throughout Tameside, Manchester and Derbyshire.
In each placement you will be allocated a mentor within the school, this is usually the class teacher, who will support you with your teacher training. We also provide all training and documentation to the schools so they know what to expect from you and how our timetable works.
You will begin by observing other teachers and then by the end of placement 2, you should be teaching up to 80% of a teacher’s workload. You will be given a structured week by week plan to help develop your skills and knowledge.
Placements run from September to January for Placement 1, and then February to June for Placement 2. You will be in the classroom for four days per week, then come into college one or two days for academic lectures, usually a Friday.
If you are currently employed in the education sector and wish to arrange your own placement at the school you are working in, we are happy to discuss this with the school and can provide them with the training and support they need.
You will be observed teaching at least three times over the course of both placements so please bear this in mind when considering arranging your own placement. Should you wish to do this please contact a member of the team to discuss the location and other general school information.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
