QTS (qualified teacher status) allows you to teach in state schools in England.

To teach in the rest of the UK or internationally, you may wish to consider a ‘PGCE (or PGDE) with QTS’ qualification instead.

About the course

The course combines an intensive programme of initial teacher training with real experience and responsibility. The aim is to develop your competence, confidence and skills in the classroom and with students in secondary school. The course will give you teaching experience across at least two key stages of the 11-18 age range.

You will be expected to maintain an extensive professional portfolio showing achievement in relation to the Teachers’ Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

On the salaried route you will be employed by your host school for the duration of the course, and be given classroom responsibilities right from the start.

On the non-salaried route you will slowly be introduced to classroom responsibilities and teach up to 60% of a teacher's timetable.

After the year, if you successfully complete your assignments, observations and portfolio, you will gain Qualified Teacher Status.

The course includes:

Bespoke 1:1 mentoring

Fortnightly lectures

Subject specific and general pedagogy sessions

Fortnightly shiur (talk) for trainees who specialise in Jewish Studies

General pedagogy sessions include topics such as: behaviour management, assessment techniques, differentiation in the classroom

We also run a bi-annual specialist trip to Israel for 5 days

Excellent relevant training is provided by expert practitioners and subject specialists, tailored to the individual needs of trainees.

JTTP offers opportunities for strong applicants to join a Teach to Lead Track which will include further training and placement on leadership and in depth understanding of education. Candidates wishing to be considered for the Teach To Lead Track should visit Teachtolead.uk

Interview process

We will invite candidates for interview once a UCAS application has been received.

Tested in English and numeracy competency.

Teach a lesson in their chosen school with JTTP and school panel present

Have an interview with a panel comprised of a Head Teacher, the programme coordinator and any other relevant member of staff according to the school interview policy and safer recruitment policy.

The interview day is a chance for prospective trainees to find out further information about the course and the school and to have any questions answered.

How school placements work

You will work in your chosen school full time (or part time as agreed with your host school) and be responsible for both planning and assessment of your classes.

Placements will include:

• bespoke 1-1 mentoring

• weekly observations

• a swap to teach in a different partnership school

• a placement in a contrasting setting

• a primary school visit

• a special needs school visit

• residential trip to outstanding schools

Salary

You will be paid and taxed as an unqualified teacher pay scale.

The salary awarded will differ between schools; you should check the salary with the school before you apply.

There are no fees to pay as your host school will cover all your fees.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Requirements

Qualifications

Degree awarded by a UK Higher Education Institution (or recognised equivalent qualification)

At least a C/4 grade in GCSE English and mathematics, or equivalent (IELTS Level 6.5 av., Cambridge Certificate at Proficiency Level, TEFL)

You must have a strong subject knowledge of your chosen subject

Able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English

Show competency in numeracy and literacy.

If your degree is from outside the UK, please contact UK NARIC to check if your qualifications are recognised in the UK.

Other requirements

Trainees will be required to obtain a DBS enhanced certificate.

If you have spent time abroad within the last 5 years trainees will be required to provide overseas criminal police checks.

Safeguarding checks including teacher barred lists will be undertaken by the Lead school.

The Jewish Secondary Schools Consortium is a partnership of leading orthodox secondary schools, consisting of Hasmonean High School, Immanuel College, JFS School, Kantor King Solomon High School and Yavneh College, the Lead school. Our accredited provider is the Jewish Teacher Training Partnership.
