About the course

You will attend university training days at UCL Institute of Education alongside students recruited via other routes. On the Tuition Fee route you will carry out academic assignments leading to the award of masters level credits.

The School Direct English PGCE introduces students to the broad scope of English as a curriculum subject, including media and drama, across the 11–16 age range. Along with practical knowledge, it offers perspectives on the role of language in learning, the teaching of literacies and literature, the principles of syllabus design and evaluation, and assessment and recording.

You will develop an understanding of classroom practice and the theories underpinning teaching and learning in English, media and drama. Tasks set throughout the year will enable you to reflect on your own as well as children’s learning and development. All our schools offer opportunities to work with pupils who have English as an additional language or special educational needs.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Students who successfully complete this programme will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the student's continuing professional development.

Interview process

The BTSA will coordinate the selection process. All applications will be checked to see if the applicant meets the entry criteria. Those who are shortlisted will be invited for an interview, which will involve a range of activities to assess suitability for teaching.

UCL carries out second interviews on the Tuition Fee Secondary route.

How school placements work

Student teachers undertake two placements (totaling 120 days).

As a BTSA School Direct trainee you will spend a total of 120 days on school placements applying the educational theories learned and developing your teaching practice.

The main placement will be hosted by the School Direct Secondary School the applicant applied to. The second, will be within a contrasting Secondary school, organised by the BTSA.

During your time in school your teaching practice will be supported by an experience Subject Mentor and Professional Coordinator Mentor. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

Your tutor from the UCL Institute of Education will visit you in school on a regular basis and liaise with your school mentor regarding your training and development. Your Institute tutor will carry out your final assessment in school against the national Teachers’ Standards.

Requirements

Qualifications

UCL requires a minimum of a 2:2 2:2 UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in an English-related subject, including Drama.

GCSEs in English Language and Maths at grade C/5 or above.

UCL does not accept ‘additional’ or ‘applied’ GCSE subjects.

For equivalency testing UCL will only accept tests from www.equivalencytesting.com

Applicants must achieve a pass in the Literacy and Numeracy Professional Skills Tests before training begins.

Personal qualities

We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who demonstrate their passion and enthusiasm for teaching and have a desire to share this with young people.

You should be highly motivated, able to adapt and have the resilience to work well under pressure. Ideal candidates will be organised and demonstrate good inter-personal skills.

Trainees should have the ability to reflect critically on their own practice and progress.

Other requirements

All applicants will be expected to have gained some experience in a classroom, ideally prior to interview.

Teacher Training providers have a responsibility to ensure that trainees have the health and physical capacity to teach and will not put children and young people at risk of harm. All applicants will be required to successfully complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks.

If you have lived, worked or travelled in another country for three months or longer in the last ten years, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct from the relevant country/countries.
