About the course

LTSA SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) works in partnership across Lincolnshire to deliver high quality school-based primary and secondary teacher training. Training places are available through the SCITT (core) and School Direct training programmes; all trainee teachers will follow the same programme irrespective of the route followed.

Interview process

The LTSA SCITT conducts a rigorous selection process in order to secure the best candidates for the teaching profession. If you are shortlisted you will be invited to a formal selection day.

The selection day will take place in a school and be conducted by the programme leaders of the course and school leaders.

The selection activities may include:

*A formal interview

*A short presentation to a group of students on an area of your subject which interests you for secondary trainees

*A small group activity with primary school children for primary trainees

*A written task

At the selection day, preferences for training schools will be discussed with you. Following the selection day for primary trainees, you will then be invited to spend two days in a primary school which may then provide your training.

Following the selection day for secondary trainees, you will then be invited to spend a day in the school which may provide your training.

At the school visit you will have the opportunity to meet with senior leaders and staff members in the school and spend time in the classroom.

A formal offer of training will then be made to you through UCAS Teacher Training.

How school placements work

Trainees are in their main training school from Day 1 of the academic year, therefore gaining an insight into how a classroom is set up and building excellent relationships with pupils and staff. Training runs alongside the academic year and trainees will be in school until the end of the summer term.

In addition, trainees spend a second placement in a contrasting school in the spring half term to gain a wider experience of settings.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £22,000
  • a bursary of £20,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

All entrants must hold a first degree of a United Kingdom higher education institute or equivalent. A first degree comprises 300 HE credit points of which 60 must be at a level 6. The degree should be at a minimum of 2:2, but third class degrees will be considered when there is additional evidence.

GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics or equivalent for secondary trainees.

Other requirements

You will need to pass the Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy before starting the course. These are designed to test whether you have the basic level of literacy and numeracy needed to teach to a national standard.

LTSA SCITT will also undertake the relevant safeguarding checks before your training commences, including an Enhanced DBS check. LTSA SCITT will give you full support in completing these checks once you had an offer of training.

The Lincolnshire Teaching School Alliance (LTSA) SCITT provides a dynamic and supportive environment in which to learn to teach in the primary and secondary sectors. We believe we offer a first class training programme, where trainees are supported by highly experienced and committed staff eager to share their skills, experience and practice with the next generation of teachers.

LTSA SCITT works with a number of lead schools and placement schools who are highly experienced in the field of teacher training and subscribe to the same ethos. We all value the contribution young and enthusiastic trainees can bring to our staff and students. Within a caring and stimulating atmosphere we wish to support them to become outstanding teachers and future leaders of our learning communities.

Schools who host LTSA SCITT trainees are committed to the continued professional development of their staff; we see the initial training of teachers as the first step on the journey to becoming an outstanding teacher and offer highly structured induction and development programmes in our schools.

Our trainees have valued being part of a school from the beginning of their training. With the support of highly experienced central team and school-based staff, trainees are given every opportunity to meet and exceed the Teachers’ Standards and so attain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

LTSA SCITT also believes that professional practice can be continually enhanced through academic research. The University of Lincoln will co-deliver our programme culminating in a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters’ credits.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Lincolnshire Teaching School Alliance SCITT recognises the needs of all its trainees and will put a support plan in place for these trainees. We value the personal pastoral care that we put in place for each of our trainees and will work collaboratively to ensure that full support is given from the central team and school-based staff.

In addition, all trainees are a student of the University of Lincoln and as such have access to the full range of support offered by the university.
