About the course
Our courses all lead to QTS and are available with or without the PGCE. The key elements of our training are as follows:
One-day-a-week intensive core training when trainees come together to learn, discuss and share ideas about teaching and learning content, theory and pedagogy.
Access to outstanding school practice in different settings (including SEND experience) via our well-established association of schools
Effective in-school support and coaching via a trained School Based Mentor (SBM), Visiting Tutor (VT) and other key personnel
Carefully timetabled teaching sessions, increasing throughout the training, reviewed termly and supported by weekly developmental observations and meetings
A full induction programme to prepare trainees for the start of their first term. This includes a meeting between the SBM, VT and trainee to discuss the Personal Training Plan (PTP) based on particular needs
A clear focus on key areas including subject knowledge for teaching, effective behaviour for learning, assessment, systematic synthetic phonics and early mathematics for Primary
A good and improving Subject Knowledge for Teaching is vitally important and this will be developed through audits, action plans and a range of developmental activities
A series of structured Key Tasks which develop key skills, understanding and knowledge linked to the Teachers' Standards
A carefully selected contrasting second placement linked to individual trainee needs
Opportunities to visit schools offering education in the phases before / after your training phase
Documentation to support planning and observations
Documentation to support monitoring and assessment of progress
One-day-a-week core training takes place at associate schools in and around The Deepings School and Bourne Westfield Primary Academy. The remaining four days /week are spent in your host training schools.
Assessment is via:
The creation of a Portfolio of Evidence to demonstrate meeting the Teachers' Standards
Assessed written assignments (2 for QTS or 3 if undertaking the PGCE)
Regular progress reviews assist in the monitoring and reporting of your progress throughout the year. A range of assessment evidence is used including lesson observations, discussions and other portfolio evidence. The VT and SBM will ensure the trainee is prepared for the final visit assessment via a summative assessment document. A final visit assessor then attends the school for one full day to assess the portfolio, discuss progress with the SBM/other school staff and observe the trainee teach 2 lessons.
Rigorous selection and recruitment is an important part of our programme and we want to make sure that we recruit the very best graduates.
Stage 1 Application screening
We consider your qualifications, school experience and your personal statement. Any candidates rejected at this stage may request feedback.
Stage 2 Panel interview
This is usually held with a panel of 3 -4 SCITT staff, including a subject specialist for secondary. Secondary interviewees are asked to prepare a 10-minute presentation on an aspect of the KS4 curriculum and are informed of this by letter prior to the interview. Primary interviewees are asked to prepare a reading task, sharing a book with an age group of their choice. For Primary training places, candidates also sit an English and Maths test.
Stage 3 Host School Visit (HSV)
We ask you to visit your potential training school for a day. Whilst here, you may be interviewed by the Head of Department or members of SLT and there will be opportunities to tour the school and meet the staff teams as well as the children. This is an opportunity to ensure that you and the school are happy with each other.
We are committed to safeguarding, therefore, if offered a place, all trainees are required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check. Original exam certification and the required photo ID must be available at the time of interview. In the case of lost certificates, duplicates must be obtained by the candidate from the awarding body.
How school placements work
We have very close links with around 30 schools who have been successfully involved in initial teacher training with us for some years. For the salaried route, trainees have already generally had a conversation with a school / Headteacher to agree their place prior to application. Salaried routes are rarer as they come at a cost to the school. Placements begin in the September of the training year and trainees ork in a host school and associated schools until the end of the academic year in July. During this time, at least one day in the phase prior to /following the one in which you train is provided, as is SEND school experience. The 6-week Second School placement is in January – February.
Schools are individually matched to candidate need and selected for their training capacity as well as in negotiation with candidates for location and convenience. We have a growing number of schools and so it is our aim to ensure that no candidate has to travel too far for their training although in Lincolnshire, due to the poor transport links in some areas, the ability to drive will bring more opportunities.
Although Primary trainees will specialise in a Key Stage, they are trained across at least four year groups and all of our Primary trainees, even those with a KS2 focus, are trained in phonics. For Secondary, the majority are trained in the 11-16 age group although for some (eg Business Studies) this is extended to 16-19 too. All trainees in schools with 6th forms are encouraged to become involved with post-16 by the end of their courses.
The salary (unless otherwise agreed with the Head / employing school) will be point 1 of the Unqualified Teacher scale.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
We seek the basic national GCSE / degree requirements although for candidates who need it, we do offer equivalence tests in English, Maths and Science at a cost of £50/paper. If qualifications have been obtained outside the United Kingdom, the applicant must obtain a NARIC confirmation to show the equivalence of the qualifications held. Ideally, skills tests will also have been passed, or at least booked, prior to interview.
We want passionate trainees who feel inspired by the different needs in our schools. Recent school experience is crucial, as it demonstrates a clear commitment to teach and a realistic understanding of the challenges and rewards. Good understanding of your chosen sector is essential, demonstrating an awareness of recent educational developments and good subject knowledge.
We seek applicants who possess a range of transferable skills relating to commitment and motivation, resilience, flexibility, communicating effectively, self-awareness and critical thinking, teamwork, decision-making ability, organisation and time management and research. We demand commitment to demonstrating consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct.
Applicants with recent school experience in their chosen phase in an English school, and who have done a little research on the National Curriculum, will put themselves at an advantage at interview. We want to know that you are serious about the profession, seeing your communication skills and confidence shine through – teaching is all about making relationships and not necessarily about first class degrees.
Any offer will of course be conditional upon a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.
About the training provider
Bourne Westfield is the lead school for School Direct training places for The Deepings SCITT which provides a range of school-based programmes in both Primary and Secondary phases for South Lincolnshire. We sit just North of Peterborough and serve North Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire having ‘migrated’ from the CfBT SCITT and moved down to Deeping St James, from Lincoln, in 2015. Since then we have had 100% pass rate and our most recent end-of-year survey data saw trainees rate both Primary and Secondary programmes as ‘outstanding.’
Our School Direct ITT programmes include a PGCE option awarded by the University of Hull. This delivery takes place at The Deepings and the PGCE comes with 60 Masters Credits.
We are a small local provider; with 20-25 trainees in each phase every year, we very much value our 'family ethos.' We always aim for exceptional results in terms of the quality of the training and the career prospects of our trainees. Ofsted last rated us as 'good' in every category (June 2013,) describing our, "effective recruitment and rigorous selection of highly suitable trainees and consistently high rates of employment."
Training with disabilities and other needs
Applications are welcomed from trainees with disabilities. Our training venues offer disabled access as do some of our host schools. On interview, a short Health Survey determines whether or not a referral to Occupational Health Services is necessary in order to ensure that we can meet your needs. Amongst our successes have been trainees with dyslexia, dyspraxia, epilepsy and arthritis.
