About the course
As a Chemistry Initial Trainee Teacher (ITT) you will learn how to plan and teach effective Chemistry lessons. Working in the Science Department you will develop a clear understanding of how the subject is delivered in secondary schools. You will gain valuable experience in Science subjects whilst on the course.
A significant amount of your learning and training will take place during two block placements within our Alliance schools. You will also attend subject knowledge days at the University of Huddersfield. The Course starts early September 2019 and will finish during June 2019. You will complete a minimum of 120 days in school. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the PGCE (with QTS). This comprises of 120 credits, 90 of which are at Masters Level.
At the GLA, we try to contrast the two placement schools as much as possible, providing the trainee with a breadth of experience which will make them employable in the future.
You will be placed in your subject Department and will receive practical training which will allow you to develop a clear understanding of educational issues and effective classroom techniques. You will be gradually introduced to teaching through observations, training, assessments and marked assignments. Throughout the course you will be supported by teachers, senior leaders and trained mentors. You will be provided with the opportunity to immerse yourself fully in school life.
We believe that a GLA school direct trainee is provided with a realistic teacher training experience and we have no doubt you will build a network of contacts within the teaching profession. Many of our former trainees have secured employment within our Alliance schools and continue to train with the GLA in their NQT year and beyond.
We are confident our GLA trainees are very well supported during their training year. School leaders have a firm commitment to ensuring that all of our trainees complete their studies with the essential skills and knowledge to prepare them for a rewarding career in the teaching profession.
Applications are received on our behalf by the University of Huddersfield via UCAS. We work closely together to ensure all applicants meet the academic requirements of the course. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview at one of the GLA schools. You will be provided with details of the interview once selected. Under normal circumstances, the interviews comprise of:
*Mini Teach (15 minutes) with a class of students (Key stage 3)
*Formal Interview with Teachers & Representatives from the UoH
*Meeting with Head of Department to explore Subject Knowledge.
How school placements work
You will have two block placements during the training year and training is delivered in our GLA schools by senior leaders, teachers and lecturers from the University of Huddersfield. There are 5 secondary schools within our Alliance located in the Kirklees area.
Wherever possible we try and consider trainees preferences over schools, but this is not always feasible. We do consider travelling distances, but trainees must demonstrate some flexibility over school placements.
For secondary training you will cover the age range 11 - 16 and you may be offered the opportunity to gain experience in post 16 education wherever possible.

This information is for applicants applying to study at the University of Huddersfield in the academic year 2019/20. Please note that your tuition fees for subsequent years may rise in line with inflation (RPI-X).
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Chemistry or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Entry requirements are:
*An Honours degree (2:2 or above) - least 50% of your degree should be in Chemistry;
*GCSE English Language & Mathematics at grade 4 or above (grade C or above if the previous GCSE grading scheme) or a pass at grade 4 or above with equivalencytesting.com
- Two A Levels (1 in a Science Subject)
*You must have passed the Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy before you start your training course. Please note that you must have registered for the tests before we offer you an interview.
Requirements to be met by 31 August 2019
You must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, and that you have the intellectual and academic capabilities to meet the required Teachers’ Standards by the end of the programme.
All GLA Schools have very high expectations of their Trainees. At interview we will be seeking to recruit individuals who are:

- Inspiring and self-motivated individuals
- Individuals who are passionate about their subject
- Prepared to work hard to achieve the best outcomes for all students
- Professional and have a clear commitment to joining the teaching
• A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and health check. There is a charge (currently £44). You don’t need to do anything before you apply.
• You should provide two references. If you are about to graduate or have graduated within the past three years, one referee should be a university or college lecturer who can comment on your academic ability.

The Green Light Alliance (GLA) is a growing partnership of schools and institutions in West Yorkshire. Lead Schools Shelley College (Secondary), and Heaton Avenue Primary School, Cleckheaton were both designated as Teaching Schools in 2014.
