About the course
The School Direct is a thorough and effective way of training 'on the job', with less time in University and more time in the classroom. Trainees are able to benefit form this extra time by absorbing more of the excellent teaching practices around them as well as being accepted as a member of teaching staff in a quicker time.
Similar to the traditional University-led Primary PGCE, the School Direct course enables it's trainees to gain a QTS or 'qualified teaching status'. The course aims to give participants experience of the full range of ages between 5 and 11 in two contrasting school experiences. Trainees observe and eventually teach (after a comfortable lead up) in their different schools. Trainees also benefit from a Continuing Personal Development day, which shows them them how to effectively teach the full range of subjects, which may be new to many following a subject specific degree. In addition, Academic tutoring will take place once a week at Trinity University where trainees will essentially be taught the academic requirements of the course.
At the end of the course St Anthony's will help it's trainees find employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher. And with a wide range of partnership and schools both with and without a Catholic focus, we feel confident we can provide assistance with this important first step. Indeed, in the years since we have been leading our own School Direct programme, all our trainees have found full time employment in teaching meaning we currently hold a 100 % employment rate.
If an application is successful the applicant will be invited to attend an individual interview. A formal invitation will be sent by Leeds Trinity, but St Anthony's will also send details of the interview by email.
Once an invitation to individual interview has been received it is recommended that the applicant contact St Anthony's as soon as possible to confirm their availability. If an applicant is unable to make an interview or has decided not to pursue their application they must also inform us of this as soon as possible.
The interview will be held here at St Anthony's and will take place in a single afternoon or morning. The interview is divided into two stages. The first involves a short, 15 minute teaching task delivered to a small group of age-appropriate children. The tasks is then assessed and those who successfully delivered the short lesson will be invited to attend the next part of the interview.
The second stage invites applicants to attend a panel interview. The panel will usually consist of two or three interviewers from our alliance schools, usually led by our School Direct Lead, Mrs C. McFadden.
Once all second stage interviews have been completed, a decision will be made by the panel based on the outcome of both stages. All outcomes will be shared on the day of interview, either in person or via telephone.
All Interview information, including details of the teaching task and group composition, will be sent to applicants in advance.
How school placements work
All our School Direct Trainees are given the opportunity to train in two contrasting schools which will be chosen, with the trainee's personality, experience and location in mind.
St Anthony's uses all its alliance schools, together with those in nearby localities who wish to work with us. Most of our partnership schools have a strong Catholic ethos, but we do also have schools form the Church of England amongst our training schools.
All schools are situated within the West Yorkshire region, being located in Leeds, Wetherby and Wakefield. All trainees should be able to reach their placement school comfortably and in good time and therefore the trainee's location is taken into consideration before allotting schools.
School Placements usually begin in October. The first stage school, or 'host school' will give the trainee time to observe and gather evidence of effective teaching and classroom management, before allowing them when they feel ready, to teach their first core subject lessons.
The Second stage placement begins toward the end of November, and allows trainee to move to a new school, known as the 'home school'). The home school will also be used for their third placement when the trainee moves to their preferred year group. During their time at their home school, trainees will teach more regularly, eventually allowing them to effectively 'take-over' the class for a high proportion of their time in school.
During school placement, trainees will also receive CPD training in a variety of other schools within our alliance, which will build up their range of subject knowledge.
All placements are carefully chosen to suit the trainee and all experience offered swill be according to the personal requirements of the trainee. Our course is a 'bespoke' training scheme with everything tailored to the individual trainee who is at the heart of our School Direct programme.

I line with DfE requirements, auccessful applicants must have the following qualifications:
- GCSE in English, Maths and Science at grade C and above. (Leeds Trinity University offers a Mathematics subject enhancement test to those who have a conditional place on the course but who do not already have GCSE Maths).

N.B. Third class degrees may be considered if relevant school-based voluntary or paid work experience has been gained.

All successful applicants will be subject to the usual checks. All trainees should be able to produce evidence of all their qualifications, including having successfully having completed the National Skills Tests. In addition all trainees will have to pass a DBS check. If DBS checks have already been made at another institution, a fresh DBS may be required by our Academic partner, Leeds Trinity University.
About the training provider
The St Anthony’s Catholic School Alliance provides an outstanding Catholic education for children from the four compass points of the city of Leeds and its neighbouring villages. This partnership offers a wide-range of experiences, from inner city to village locations. The alliance contains schools with high percentage English as an additional language, and high pupil premium cohorts; to contrasting catchments with high percentage gifted and talented pupils in village locations. This in itself provides the opportunity to train in a diverse range of high achieving schools, three of which are currently graded outstanding, with several others displaying outstanding features.
The Alliance has worked effectively in partnership with Leeds Trinity University for many years, providing outstanding training opportunities for teaching at primary level. The lead school has also previously been a partnership school for School Direct with another outstanding school in the city.
We provide high-quality training, mentoring and coaching in a supportive and caring environment (trainee feedback tells us so). And since training began, all our graduates have achieved 100% employment. Our Teaching School is aspirational and aims to support and train outstanding teachers of the future, with a real focus on the quality of teaching and learning.
Working closely with the National College for Teaching and Leadership we lead and share research that shapes and develops the future of education. Our investment in training teachers extends beyond Initial Teacher Training as many of our trainees continue to complete our NQT and RQT programmes, extending through to leadership training opportunities.
About the accredited body
We are currently working in partnership with Leeds Trinity. The University provides the academic element of the course, as well as supporting our trainees with theoretical training and pastoral guidance.
Leeds Trinity has been educating undergraduates and graduates in Leeds for the past 50 years and has long held a reputation for high-quality teacher-training. Indeed many of our alliance colleagues trained with Trinity.
Trinity students are 'highly satisfied' (according to the National Student Survey). And although it is one of the region's smaller universities, many trainees say they appreciate being a name, not a number, at Leeds Trinity University.
Training with disabilities and other needs
As we are in partnership with Leeds Trinity, we are able to offer all our Trainees extra academic and pastoral support. In addition to help with such diverse skills as essay-writing or coaching for the national Skills Tests, St Anthony's trainees are able to use Trinity's Student Support Services to access support for a range of disabilities:
- dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties
- medical conditions
- Asperger's syndrome
- visual and hearing impairments
- physical or mobility difficulties
- mental health concerns
All our alliance schools along with the Trinity campus are accessible for those in a wheelchair or with limited mobility.
