About the course

The School Direct training programme for Music consists of 3 distinct 'phases to teaching' to develop the Skills, Knowledge and Understanding to teach young people in the 21st Century. The course content will be delivered through centrally taught sessions of subject knowledge, pedagogy, and academic assignments.
Phase 1 'Enable and Establish'
Putting the foundations of classroom management, teaching and learning in place.
Phase 2 Empower
Trainees take more ownership of foundations and develop greater independence.
Phase 3 Embedding
Trainees demonstrating advanced classroom practice and consistently performing to good or outstanding.
The School Direct Training Programme will also consist of a programme of professional studies and subject studies across the cluster of schools, and will be integrated into the training year. These will be overseen by professional mentors who will have the overall responsibility for the management of the provision, ensuring that student teachers have full access to the appropriate age and ability range. Subject mentors are responsible for providing a programme which will involve individual and collaborative teaching and weekly mentor support.
Subject knowledge and Pedagogy.
Subject Knowledge of music will be delivered and developed by experienced professionals throughout the training year. These sessions will equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to teach young people. The pedagogy of teaching Music will also be covered during through BCU taught sessions, looking at aspects such as organising groups effectively managing transitions safely.
How much time trainees spend training in school.
We exceed the statutory number of 120 days in school by offering over 140 days school based experience providing significant opportunities to develop your practice.
How will you be assessed?
The Assessment of the course is in 2 parts:
You will be assessed and monitored throughout the course against the Teachers Standards. You will be assessed in line with the HEI Ofsted framework and trainees must demonstrate the minimum standard in order to achieve QTS in both Parts 1 and 2 of the Teachers’ Standards.
PGCE element of the Course.
The academic element of the award is delivered by the University of Worcester, a long standing collaborative partner of the SCITT. The 4 assignments completed throughout the year will give trainees Masters credits and the PGCE award alongside QTS.
The ITT programme is an intensive year, demanding full time commitment. Colleagues across the partnership will go the extra mile to support trainees throughout the year so long as they demonstrate the commitment needed to succeed on the course.
The selection process is rigorous, robust and transparent and is designed to help us decide whether we believe you should train with us, and to help you decide if teaching is the right career for you. The interview is a 2 way process, teaching and the school has to be right for you and vice versa.

How school placements work
The placement of trainees is carefully managed to ensure a breadth of experience in relation to the designated key stages for training as well as enhancement in Key Stage 5 for the 11-16 trainees and Key Stage 3 for the 14-19 trainee. The minimum expectation for the Key Stage 5 enhancement is identified.( External Examiner 2018)
You will have 2 Placements throughout the year and these will be in contrasting schools. These will the full age and ability range you have chosen to train in and covers 11-18 including 2 middle schools.
Your contrasting placement will be early in the spring term to allow you to return to your training school to complete the course. The contrasting placement is 8 weeks in duration.
Partnership schools are located in South Worcestershire from Droitwich in north of the region to Evesham in the South and also includes Malvern and Ledbury and includes 7 high schools and 4 2 middle schools.
Your course will begin at the start of the academic year and will include an induction period into your school, central sessions focusing on the pedagogy of teaching and subject specific knowledge development. You will be a valued colleague within the school from the start of the course, developing your wider professional role focusing on part 2 of the Teachers Standards.
Your timetable within the school setting will be incremental during placement 1 and 2.
Phase 1 collaborative teaching, observation, and some solo teaching with timetable of 25-50%.
Phase 2 Collaborative and solo teaching with 50% teaching timetable.
Phase 3 Increased solo teaching to 50% timetable.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
Minimum degree required: Lower Second.
A degree, usually an Honours degree in a subject applicable to your teaching subject. For maths and physics the minimum degree entry requirement is third class degree.
Grade 4 or C at GCSE (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics is essential for all applicants. The SCITT will organise alternative examinations for candidates without these qualifications to demonstrate the equivalence to GCSE standard.
Professional skills Tests.
Numeracy and literacy skills tests must be completed as part of the application process, and ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course.
What We Are Looking For.
Interest in and commitment to education and children
You will need to be enthusiastic about working with children, and possess an ability to relate to them. On the course, you will be encouraged to develop good working relationships with teachers and their pupils.
Oral and written communication.
Communication skills are, of course, vital to the teacher's role and your skills will be developed through all course elements.
You will need to work co-operatively on joint projects, work as a member of a team and accept the responsibility of leadership roles.
All trainees need to have an enhanced DBS check prior to the start of the course.
The enhanced DBS check will be carried out by the Accredited Provider prior to commencing your training. You will be required to bring your DBS certificate to admissions at Prince Henry's and South Worcestershire SCITT along with proof of identity so that your DBS number can be recorded.
Fitness to Teach.
The DfE requires all trainees to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire to demonstrate their fitness to teach. This will we be provided at interview if your application is successful.
