About the course
School Direct is an exciting opportunity to attend a school led training course which enables you to spend most of your time training in school over a period of a year. This route into teaching is for graduates who prefer the more ‘hands on’ approach. Straight away you will be placed with an outstanding teacher, learning from the very best. You will need to attend the University Of Worcester for approximately 27 days over the year and you will have experience teaching in 2 of our partnership schools.
PGCE award: Students achieving 60 credits at Masters level and meeting the requirements for QTS will be awarded Postgraduate Certificate in Education with QTS.

The School Direct Programme allows schools to recruit and train their own teachers. The course lasts for 1 year and is full time. The 27 contact days will be at The University Of Worcester and the fees will be approximately £9250 a year. For more information please see the links below

How we select our trainees
Marlbrook Primary is the lead school and we will be involved in the recruitment process.
If successful, the interview will include:
- A short talk from a Senior member from the school you have applied to.
- Information about the course from a member of staff from the University of Worcester.
- Maths and English tasks.
- A short (5 minute) presentation from the applicant.
*A chance to talk to our pupils.
- An individual interview-please bring with you original identification documentation.
You will only require one interview and we will let candidates know on the same day if the outcome.
Successful applicants will require DBS clearance and suitable references.
How school placements work
The School Direct training is school-led training, it will last for 1 year and involve 3 placements. You will select your prefered school when you complete your UCAS application online:
Placement 1-prefered Key stage (1 or 2) September until Decemeber.
Placement 2-the key stage you have not been in January until March.
Placement 3-trainees will go back to placement 1 in the same class.
You will have opportunity to observe and work with other year groups throughout your practice. You will receive high quality support from your mentor and outstanding training opportunites throughout your training.
Students will need to attend the University of Worcester for approximately 27 days a year. You will experience a dynamic taught programme, ensuring depth and breadth across the primary subjects. This will include asignments and tasks. You will be assigned a University tutor that will work closely with your mentor at your school placements.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- GCSE’s in English, Maths and Science grade C or above.
- An honours graduate having achieved 2:2 honours degree or above.
- Professional Skills Tests
These should be passed or a date secured at the time of the interview.

Marlbrook is an outstanding Teaching school at the heart of its community, with a clear vision for the future. We currently have 596 pupils on role and we are now on our journey to becoming a three form entry school. We are collaborated with two local smaller schools, Little Dewchurch C of E Primary School, an outstanding school and Ewyas Harold Primary which is a good school with outstanding features and more recently St Martin’s Primary School. The outstanding practice has been recognised nationally and the Headteacher (Tracey Kneale CBE) is a designated National Leader of Education and OFSTED inspector and mentor. The school delivers the Outstanding Teacher Programme and The Improving Teacher Programme to teachers locally to improve practice. The outstanding teachers across our schools are used as models of outstanding practice throughout all training packages delivered. We work closely with the Local Authority to deliver and organise conferences, NQT training, school to school support and moderation across the county for KS1 and KS2.
As a lead school we can offer placements at a range of Primary schools in Herefordshire within our partnership.
About the accredited provider
We have worked collaboratively with the University of Worcester for many years with great success. We ensure we communicate regularly to ensure the training provided meets the needs of all our trainee teachers.
As a student you will be expected to attend all the training modules opportunities at the University, this will compliment all the school based training we can provide throughout the year.
We are proud to say that many of our teachers across the collaboration trained at the University of Worcester.
