About the course
The majority of the training takes place in schools and is generally of a practical, skills-based nature. Sessions are arranged with in-house specialists in given fields, and each trainee is assigned an experienced subject mentor. The university balances this with the provision of a rigorous academic element, which enables trainees to reflect on work done in schools.
The University of Reading has a long and highly successful experience of ITT and particularly of working with schools on school-based training programmes. Initial teacher training courses are based on the belief that education is about active and meaningful learning through which teachers become analytical, creative and receptive to new ideas. The universities work closely with partnership schools, planning and delivering training programmes in collaboration - teaching is practice-led as well as research-led. The universities support us in recruiting the highest-calibre trainees who become excellent teachers at the end of their training.
Subject specialism is at the core of the university-based periods of training. You will work with specialist tutors in your subject, many of whom play a leading role in national research and policy developments. Staff from schools and other organisations (including national subject associations) work closely alongside university staff. You will also benefit from specialist facilities at the universities’ campuses.
How school placements work
The salaried chemistry programme will enable you to develop the professional skills and knowledge to deliver all aspects of science up to GCSE and chemistry to A-level.

• Develop a critical understanding of current debates relating to science and education
• Develop your subject knowledge

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You are normally required to have a good undergraduate honours degree 2:2 or above (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). You will also need to have achieved grade C or above in GCSE mathematics and English or equivalent.
You will need to demonstrate sufficient understanding of and insight into the role of the teacher, the classroom environment and the processes involved in learning and teaching. In order to show such understanding and insight it may be beneficial to undertake a visit to a school.
About the training provider
The Berkshire Teaching School (Berkshire TSA) is a teaching school based at Maiden Erlegh School, a National Teaching School designated by the National College for Teaching & Leadership. We have an excellent track record and provide teacher training at various schools in the Berkshire area.
We participate in the Schools Direct Programme of school-led training and work closely with The University of Reading to deliver training, offering both salaried and unsalaried routes.
With the University of Reading being so close to our teaching school, we have a strong partnership with the university. Reading is a vibrant town, with excellent employment opportunities.
We offer training in a variety of schools, including primary and secondary schools and all key stages. You can train at Maiden Erlegh School or the following schools under our alliance.

Many of our RPTs go on to secure jobs in their placement schools, so active engagement with the IoE partnership in training new teachers is an excellent way to recruit NQTs to your school.
