Benefit from a qualification that gives you recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), enabling you to gain employment in a school, with opportunities for continuous development through further study at MA/MSc, MPhil, PhD and EdD levels.
During the course you will spend around 70% of your time in placement schools where you will be trained across the 11-16 age range. You will develop the skills and knowledge to teach religious education in a creative and imaginative way, using a variety of different approaches. You will also engage with relevant research literature and develop the skills of a reflective and research informed practitioner.
You will attend subject-specific sessions, lectures and seminars, which are designed to develop awareness and understanding of professional issues, the nature and content of the religious education curriculum and the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching of religious education, and issues such as planning and assessment.
You will obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and up to 60 Masters level credits.
Following a successful application you will be invited to visit Sir Harry Smith Community College whereby you will have a tour of the college, meet key staff, complete a classroom based activity and have an interview by the Professional Tutor. Shortly after you will attend a formal interview at Bedford University where you will also be able to meet other potential trainees and become familiar with the University setting.
A decision will be made shortly after the interview process.
How school placements work
We are proud to be able to offer a quality experience at Sir Harry Smith Community College. Therefore, we are very careful when allocating trainees to placement schools and usually locate our trainees at schools within the Fenland so that travelling is not too onerous.
Usually, you will have two placements, starting at Sir Harry in the Autumn term and then having placement two from January - June the following year.
Sir Harry are able to offer experience of teaching from 11-18 dependent on subject specialism
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
English GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent)
Maths GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent)
A minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent in the subject for which you are applying or a degree of which at least 50% is in that subject.
A levels in the subject and/or related subjects.
Applicants whose first language is not English and who do not have GCSE grade C in English need to have IELTS with an average score of at least 6.0
All entrants must have passed the professional skills tests prior to entry.
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
Relevant work experience is desirable.
About the training provider
Lionel Walden Primary has linked with Sir Harry Smith Community College in order to deliver high quality primary and secondary School Direct training courses within Fenland, NE Cambridgeshire. Our partnership with the University of Bedfordshire enables successful trainees to achieve a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status.
Both schools have the expertise and commitment to deliver high quality training and support to trainee teachers. In recent years, trainees have been very successful in gaining employment, predominantly in Fenland schools.
Lionel Walden Primary (LWP) has strong connections with primary schools across Fenland meaning that we can offer a diverse range of high-quality placements from small village schools to some of the largest primaries in the country. Our high expectations and passion to enable children to be the best they can be runs through LWP and our partner primaries.
Sir Harry Smith (SHS) is located in Whittlesey. Its close proximity to Peterborough means that there are regular trains and buses to the town with the bus stop being a five minute walk from the school.
SHS has a very dedicated and supportive team of staff who work closely together. Each department is equipped with a mini staff room which is a quiet, secure base for planning, sharing ideas or simply having a cup of coffee. A number of our teachers completed the School Direct programme and are very willing to share their experiences with trainees. SHS will equip you with a laptop and a supportive professional development programme.
About the accredited body
We are proud to partner with the University of Bedfordshire (UoB) that has been identified by the Department for Education (DfE) as a top performing University for Initial Teacher Training.
Their recent (2016) Ofsted recognised the strength and effectiveness of the UoB's partnerships with schools such as ours. Ofsted also highlighted that, "the large majority of Secondary trainees attain outcomes at the highest levels", and that Primary trainees, "become highly professional teachers who establish positive and productive relationships, and effectively promote the learning of all pupils."
