About the course
This secondary teacher training course leads to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It prepares and equips you to teach your subject in secondary schools and post-16 colleges. School and university training is integrated throughout the course and University of York and the Pathfinder Teaching School Alliance work closely together to identify your individual capabilities and needs and to enable you to make progress in your development as a teacher.
This PGCE course comprises of 60 credits at Masters level and 60 credits at level 6 plus the recommendation for the award of QTS.
On the course you enhance your subject knowledge, understanding and skills, learn how to teach your subject, learn about the wider role of teachers in school, gain knowledge about schools and the education system, apply your skills and knowledge on school placements, gain experience of working alongside other professionals who support the care and development of individual pupils in schools.
We help you to develop the skills you need to be a successful teacher of pupils of all abilities and backgrounds. While studying with us you build your enthusiasm, confidence, knowledge and ability to teach your subject.
This course begins in early September and finishes the end of June in the following year. The PTSA offer places in English through the unsalaried route.
University of York
This course prepares trainees to become effective, creative and reflective teachers of English. Sessions at university are taught by tutors with recent and current school experience; they are of a highly practical and interactive nature. All sessions are tracked against the Teachers' Standards and linked where appropriate to the National Curriculum for English and/or examination requirements at GCSE and A-Level.
The course integrates theory and practice both on school placements and in university sessions. Trainees learn how to apply their existing subject knowledge to secondary English classrooms in addition to developing their subject knowledge further, familiarising themselves with requirements of A-Level English Literature and A-Level English Language as well as Drama and Media. Key issues such as behaviour management, differentiation and assessment are threaded through the programme.
Applications are welcomed from those with at least 50% English (Literature/Language or a combination) in their undergraduate degree. We welcome applications from all people, whatever their background, who possess a good academic profile, have experience of working with young people, particularly in classroom contexts and who have a strong interest in education.
Candidates who are invited to interview will be expected to undertake a teaching activity as well as a formal interview and other tasks related to teaching in their specific subject. Interviews will take place at the school. Prior notification of interview tasks will be provided to candidates in advance of the interview date.
University of York
No applicant will be admitted to the course without interview. Normal procedure is invitation to interview by email following consideration of your application by admissions tutors.
How school placements work
The pattern of school experience allows trainees to gain deepening insights into teaching and learning, and systematically supports the development of professional knowledge and teaching skills. Over the course of the year trainees will gain experience in two contrasting schools.
University tutors and school teachers work together to manage school experiences, to link these to university-based activities and to direct trainees to appropriate reading.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- At least 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Maths and English
- A degree classification of at least 2:2 in a subject relevant to the course you want to apply for
- Please include and other professional qualifications or courses completed such as subject booster courses or coaching awards.

Applicants must possess the following:
- Good subject knowledge in the area they wish to teach
- An understanding of how children learn
- Familiarity with issues in education
Candidates should be prepared to engage in educational issues beyond their immediate day-to-day activities, and to examine - in a critical but constructive way - the current educational system and practice.
Although there is no specific time requirement for how many hours should have been completed in a school, applicants must have school experience with the age range they wish to teach. This could be through previous employment as a teaching assistant or learning mentor or through individually organised work experience.
Participation in the PGCE course is an active process. Although there are lectures and presentations, much of the course centres on workshops, seminars, and school and classroom activities. Activities emphasise team work, and require trainees to share the responsibility for their learning.
You will be required to complete a DBS.

The Pathfinder Teaching School Alliance is based at Archbishop Holgate's School in York. Our alliance works with a range of schools in York, North Yorkshire, the East Riding and Leeds. Our aim is to provide the highest quality initial teacher training programme possible. We have over 18 years' experience of training teachers and pride ourselves on our innovative and forward thinking programme. We have outstanding outcomes and believe we prepare our trainees for the demand and rigour of the teaching profession.

About the accredited body
The Department of Education welcomes a diverse range of graduate trainees onto the PGCE course. Working in partnership with a wide range of schools in the region, we have developed a high quality PGCE course in which school teachers and university tutors share the responsibility for teacher training. Trainees spend two thirds of the course in schools and have experience in at least three schools.
As well as training to teach their subject, all trainees follow a Whole School Issues course which focuses on teaching, learning and wider school issues.
