About the course

  • Trainees will teach the full Mathematics curriculum to ages 11-16
  • Trainees will spend four days in their placement school and one day at the University of Hertfordshire
  • Trainees will be assigned a subject mentor and professional mentor with the school
  • Formal weekly observations will take place by the subject mentor and/or other staff
  • Termly formal assessments will take place, set by the University
  • Trainees will complete a 6 week second placement at a contrasting school

  • 30 minute taught lesson
  • Panel interview
  • Comprehension task

How school placements work

  • Applicants will need to state a preferred school within the East Herts Partnership and will be interviewed there
  • If successful this will be the school they complete a majority of their training in

Salary

  • Trainees will be paid on point 1 of the unqualified teachers' pay scales
  • University fees and follow on costs are paid by the schools

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Honours degree (2.2 or higher), awarded by a UK university or an overseas award recognised as equivalent by NARIC
  • Usually UH would expect the degree to have a minimum 50% content of the subject being applied for. Applicants whose degree does not meet this requirement should contact UH at secondaryteam@herts.ac.uk
  • Maths and English Language GCSE Grade 4 or above (Grade C or above under the old structure)
  • Students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency, equivalent to an overall IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band

Personal qualities

  • For the School Direct salaried route you must have experience of teaching within a school setting, as you will be assigned your own classes from the start of the training year

Other requirements

  • Professional skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy must be passed by 31st August 2019
