About the course
Over the course of an academic year, student teachers will train on the job in classrooms, from day one. Trainees will spend four and a half days a week in school carrying out a range of professional activities, including observing other teachers (including subject specialists), team-teaching and solo-teaching.
All Trainees will be based in a class in their school for the entire year, except during a 6-week second school placement halfway through the year. Trainees will be fully supported throughout the year by an assigned Mentor, an experienced teacher who will themselves be trained and supported by Teach Kent and Sussex. Trainees will benefit from weekly meetings, regular observations with constructive feedback, planning guidance and on-the-job advice, all provided by their assigned Mentor.
Trainees going through the salaried route are expected to take on a greater amount of solo teaching much earlier, and will need to be willing and able to teach lessons within the first fortnight of the academic year. Salaried Trainees will not have the same level of support with planning and other professional tasks as those going through the non-salaried route, due to the nature of their role as a member of staff.
Expectations of salaried trainees are also higher, and as a result, a significant amount of relevant experience is required. Please contact us to discuss whether your level of experience would be sufficient for that route.
Training in school is supported and enhanced by academic study and independent research. Trainees are required attend half-day training sessions every week, facilitated by Teach Kent and Sussex. These sessions will cover the full range of pedagogy required to teach in a primary setting. There are also additional subject sessions timetabled throughout the year.
Trainees will have the opportunity to select from either a QTS or PGCE with QTS route. The PGCE with QTS route is the more academic option and essential if trainees wish to teach abroad.
Trainees will be regularly assessed against the Teaching Standards through a combination of informal and formal observations by their assigned Mentor and other senior members of staff. All Trainees will need to be observed teaching in four separate year groups. They will also be required to gather evidence in support of the Teaching Standards, which will inform three formal assessments at the end of each long term. Those who select the PGCE route will also be required to complete university assignments.
Once an application is live on UCAS, it will be assessed for suitability by the Senior Mentors. If an applicant is considered suitable, they will be invited to an interview in or around Tunbridge Wells.
All applicants will be required to take written English and Maths tests on the day. Successful applicants will also be required to sit the Professional Skills Test for Teachers in English and Mathematics, undergo a full DBS check and complete a medical survey.
If a salaried applicant is successful in securing a training position with Teach Kent and Sussex, it may then be necessary for the applicant to undertake a placement interview with the school in which they will be employed. This may include an additional interview and/or the requirement to teach a lesson.
How school placements work
School placements for the salaried route operate slightly differently to those on the non-salaried route. Prospective applicants will often be required to have secured a salaried position in a school they already work in (for example as a Teaching Assistant, Cover Supervisor or Unqualified Teacher).
As the year progresses, we will endeavour to arrange for salaried places in local schools. We recommend that prospective candidates explore the non-salaried route and make clear their desire to take on a salaried place, if one becomes available, in order to discuss possible options.
Candidates will have one placement at their base school (which will cover the teaching of three year groups) and one short term placement (lasting about six weeks) in a contrasting school. All Trainees are required to gain experience and be assessed in four year groups and both primary key stages.
The salary for the year of employment is as an Unqualified Teacher, which is currently £17,208 (in 2018/19).
For trainees going through the salaried QTS only route, there are no tuition fees.
For trainees going through the salaried PGCE with QTS route, there are fees in the region of £2,340 to cover the course costs with the University of Sussex (our accredited PGCE provider).
Please be aware that at present, we cannot offer a salaried place without a candidate having already secured a salaried position in a school within Tunbridge Wells or the surrounding area.

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
A UK Undergraduate Degree.
A standard equivalent to a grade C in GCSE English, Mathematics and Science.
If you studied outside of the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an Undergraduate Degree.

All candidates for teacher training are required to pass the ITT professional skills tests before starting teacher training.
