About the course

A one-year programme centred entirely in our Plymouth schools, where you will be part of a school team from day one.

You will benefit from a full 40-week schedule from the start of term in September 2018 to the end of the Summer Term 2019. Complementing your time learning the job in school you’ll receive training from our Specialist Leaders in Education (SLE) and HEI lecturers, and a contrasting second school experience. SLE Learning Hubs have been developed across the city to support subject and pedagogy specialisms.

Shared training across the Alliance gives complete and contrasting experiences.

Trainees are ready for employment after completing their course and support will continue to be provided in your NQT years from your employer, Plymouth Local Authority and Plymouth Teaching School Alliance.

The training will include:

Plymouth Marjon University Academic Modules and Four Conferences.

PTSA Subject Knowledge Schedule (Majority of SK sessions are PTSA SLE led)

Oracy session for all trainees

Interview process

During the interview process, the PE with EBacc subject specialism will be discussed with the applicant, to establish suitability and agreement to undertake the additional workload required to train in PE with a second subject.

EBacc subjects: Science, Maths, English, History, Modern Foreign Languages or Geography

Entry requirements: All applicants must have achieved a standard equivalent to a C grade or above at A level in the relevant EBacc subject.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

Applicants with a degree qualification of 2:2 and above are eligible for the SKE bursary. Funding for SKE will be available for up to 8 weeks.

How school placements work

PTSA School Direct trainees are placed in a Plymouth.

The host school placement is the school where you will work for most of the academic year.

You will have a Subject Mentor and a PTSA school-based Professional Tutor in school to support you.

You will have a second placement in Term 4 (Spring Term 2) to gain teaching experience in a complementary school.

The HEI provide professional study support and a QA tutor for the PTSA school-based Professional Tutor to link with.

For all trainees, the PTSA School Direct programme follows the academic year in the Host School. That is, it will begin on the first day of school in September and finish when the school year ends in July.

About the training provider

The Plymouth Teaching School Alliance (PTSA) is an inclusive teaching school serving the schools of Plymouth and the region. The PTSA benefits from a mature ‘blended’ model of delivery alongside Plymouth Local Authority and Plymouth Learning Partnership Community Interest Company (PLP CiC). The two lead schools are High View Primary and Prince Rock Primary (Learning Academies Trust).

In addition to our inclusive values, we also seek to promote collaboration and evidence-informed practice. These values underpin our work. Evidence of this can be seen in the 50 schools that contribute to our teaching school alliance, our unique approach to CPD, and the wide-variety of collaborative partnerships and programmes that we offer.

We benefit from working alongside our partners in the Plymouth Local Authority, Plymouth Marjon University and Plymouth University. We also collaborate with our regional teaching school neighbours and access expertise at a national level.

We believe in a practitioner-led and school-led system and help facilitate this at all levels. We also strive to have training and support available to all educational professionals regardless of where they are in their career, from trainee teachers to CEOs.
