About the course
The Achieve with TELA School Direct programme is an established programme with a successful track record working in partnership with University of Warwick.
The course structure during your training year is split between time at University and three high quality teaching placements over two schools. During your school placement you will have an experienced and supportive mentor in school and cover teaching practice across the varied secondary age ranges. Achieve with TELA also offer alliance days, giving you the opportunity to visit different schools and meet different educational professionals and senior school leaders. Achieve school-based sessions are delivered by people working and teaching in the current education environment. You will also be part of the Achieve pedagogy twilights sessions that run during your school placements. You will be part of the Achieve cohort with other trainee teachers studying across different subjects and Universities.
Teaching at the University is delivered by a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. You’ll also attend specialist conferences where external providers deliver workshops in their specialist areas. You’ll receive a high level of support for both pastoral and academic needs.
Time spent at Warwick will focus on exploring the links between educational theory and practice. Lead lectures will introduce a key concept and theory, with seminars then enabling you to apply this new knowledge to your own practice. You’ll understand the IT skills and programs available to help you inspire pupils and do your job effectively.
You’ll be assessed in the following three modules:
Subject Studies (PG1) M Level: A series of assessments focussing on both educational theory and issues in your specialist subject (1 x 1500 word formative essay, and 1 x 4000-word essay, 1 x Academic Poster)
Reflective Practice (PG2) M Level: A reflective case study on an area of educational practice in your placement school(s) supported by a literature review (1 x 5000-word essay)
Professional Practice H Level: Meeting the Teachers’ Standards at a Good or Outstanding level (Regular observations by mentors and Teaching Fellows; Tutorials; Professional Digital Portfolio, Viva Voce)
You will also be assessed on whether you meet the Teachers’ Standards at a level appropriate for a newly qualified teacher.
Thomas Estley is the lead school in the Achieve alliance and will co-ordinate the recruitment process.
On receipt of your UCAS application, it will be screened to ensure that you met our criteria. We are looking for evidence across the following areas:
• Suitable academic qualifications (refer to entry requirements)
• Experience (paid or voluntary) in UK schools or educational-related settings, or in wider working with children or young people environment.
• A personal statement which shows an ability to reflect on this experience. Consider how your experiences, skills and achievements provide evidence that you have the potential to meet the selection criteria. Pay particular attention to reflecting on relevant experience in a way that indicates a capacity for critical reflection and an awareness of key issues in education.
• References, you will require an academic and non-academic reference. Please refer to the see the UCAS website for more guidance on suitable referees.
If your application is successfully you will be invited to an assessment day. This will involve a 1/2-day assessment at Thomas Estley. It is a rigorous and thorough process, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available.
The day will include:
Subject knowledge test
Classroom observation task
Group discussion task
A pupil panel interview
Staff panel interview
We aim to notify you with 48 hrs if you have been successful or provide you with feedback as to why you have been unsuccessful.
How school placements work
School placements are three high quality teaching placements over two schools. You will have a home school which you will start your first teaching practice in at the start of the academic year. You then have a six-week complementary placement in a different school after Christmas, before returning to your home school for the rest of your training year. During your school placements you will have an experienced and supportive mentor, as well as an Initial Teacher Training coordinator in each school along with the support from Achieve and the University.
You will be teaching across the whole 11-16 age range.
Were possible we will tell you which schools your placements are in prior to you starting the course. This gives you the opportunity to visit your placement schools and meet the teams you will be training with before you start your placement. If you have a preference for a placement in one of our alliance schools, please do let us know and if we can we will try to accommodate your request, subject to availability.

Financial support from the training provider
You'll pay the University tuition fees but you might be eligible for funding through tuition fee loans, bursaries or scholarships.
Please check the University website for confirmation on their tuition fees and support available.
You must have graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2:2 or above honours degree. Ideally you'll have studied Drama, English (depending on modules/ experience), Performing Arts, Theatre or a related discipline.
You need at least Grade C in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. (Under the new grading system from 2017 GCSE 'New Grade 4' or above is the minimum criteria)
Overseas applicants will need to prove equivalent overseas qualifications by NARIC.
The Achieve School Direct programme is a challenging course and we aim to recruit the best. We are looking for applicants with a wide range of skills, knowledge and relevant experience as well as a passion for working with young people.
This will be demonstrated by meaningful experience of working with young people, being able to develop positive relationships with young people and adults. An ability to listen, be sensitive, work collaboratively and respond to the needs of others are all crucial. You will need to be able to express your ideas confidently both orally and in writing.
All trainee students will be subject to enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau

We provide Schools Direct Initial Teacher Training in primary and secondary education. Working in partnership with the Leicestershire SCITT and three university partners : University of Leicester, Loughborough University, and Warwick University. All courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Masters Credits.
