About the course
The Achieve with TELA School Direct programme is an established programme with a successful track record working in partnership with Loughborough University .
The course structure during your training year is split between time at University and two high quality teaching placements over two schools. During your school placement you will have an experienced and supportive mentor in school and cover teaching practice across the varied secondary age ranges.
You will be part of the Achieve pedagogy twilights sessions that run during your school placements. You will be part of the Achieve cohort with other trainee teachers studying across different subjects and Universities.
You will develop your teaching competence across the 11-18 age range in relation to the National Curriculum Physical Education programmes of study, examination accredited courses (e.g. BTech, GCSE, A Level). This will be achieved largely in a practical way with the emphasis on the development of pedagogical skills and effective delivery in the secondary school context. Working alongside other trainees and with experienced teachers in schools, you will learn how to effectively promote the physical, social, moral and cultural development of pupils through physical education.
The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet and assess pupils' needs and to plan and deliver physical education safely and effectively within the framework of the National Curriculum. The coursework which you will be asked to undertake will be linked closely to your teaching experiences in schools.
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through your teaching performance during school experiences and through written coursework.
You will be expected to develop a range of competences appropriate to the role of a secondary school teacher, and to demonstrate that you meet the Teachers’ Standards.
A profile of your progress, achievements and attainment is maintained during the course.
Your progress will be monitored both by your university tutors and your school mentors and will be shared with you throughout the course. In this way, you will develop awareness of your professional strengths and areas for development; the course is designed to provide you with appropriate experiences to help you meet the full range of Teachers’ Standards.
Upon successful completion you will be awarded the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, both of which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The Post-Graduate Certificate in Education course contributes 90 credits towards a masters degree programme.
On receipt of your UCAS application, it will be screened by Loughborough University to ensure that you the criteria.
We are looking for evidence across the following areas:
• Suitable academic qualifications (refer to entry requirements)
• Experience (paid or voluntary) in UK schools or educational-related settings, or in wider working with children or young people environment.
• A personal statement which shows an ability to reflect on this experience. Consider how your experiences, skills and achievements provide evidence that you have the potential to meet the selection criteria. Pay particular attention to reflecting on relevant experience in a way that indicates a capacity for critical reflection and an awareness of key issues in education.
• References, you will require an academic and non-academic reference. Please refer to the see the UCAS website for more guidance on suitable referees.
If your application is successfully you will be invited to an assessment day at University. If your University assessment is successful you will then be invited to attend a 1/2-day assessment at Thomas Estley. Thomas Estley coordinates the School Direct recruitments process. It is a rigorous and thorough process, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available.
The School Direct assessment will include :

Classroom observation task
Group discussion task
A pupil panel interview
Staff panel interview
We aim to notify you with 48 hrs if you have been successful or provide you with feedback as to why you have been unsuccessful.
How school placements work
School placements are two high quality teaching placements over two schools.
During your school placements you will have an experienced and supportive mentor, as well as an Initial Teacher Training coordinator in each school along with the support from Achieve and the University.
You will be teaching across the whole 11-18 age range.
Were possible we will tell you which schools your placements are in prior to you starting the course. This gives you the opportunity to visit your placement schools and meet the teams you will be training with before you start your placement. If you have a preference for a placement in one of our alliance schools, please do let us know and if we can we will try to accommodate your request, subject to availability.

Financial support from the training provider
You'll pay the University tuition fees but you might be eligible for funding through tuition fee loans, bursaries or scholarships.

Minimum 2:1 honours degree entry requirement
Applicants must have an honours degree 2:1 or higher; 2.2s with extensive school experience will be considered in a relevant degree (i.e. one in which approximately 50% of the content is in physical education and/or sports science)
Minimum Grade C in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. (New grading system from 2017 GCSE ' Grade 4' or above)
You must pass Professional Skills tests in numeracy and literacy.
Overseas applicants will need to prove equivalent overseas qualifications.
The Achieve School Direct programme is a challenging course and we aim to recruit the best. We are looking for applicants with a wide range of skills, knowledge and relevant experience as well as a passion for working with young people.
This will be demonstrated by meaningful experience of working with young people, being able to develop positive relationships with young people and adults. An ability to listen, be sensitive, work collaboratively and respond to the needs of others are all crucial. You will need to be able to express your ideas confidently both orally and in writing.
All trainee students will be subject to enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau

We provide Schools Direct Initial Teacher Training in primary and secondary education. Working in partnership with three universities: University of Leicester, Loughborough University, and Warwick University. All courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Masters Credits.
