About the course
Our Primary 3-7 programme (2TXN) provides an internationally respected route into teaching. You will be well prepared to teach across the full primary range, but will receive additional training in excellent Early Years practice.
We will provide you with:
- Excellent, research-informed teaching from Senior Leaders
- 60 credits at Masters level
- A placement in EYFS and a contrasting placement in a different school in KS1, with enrichment experiences available in other settings, including a hospital school.
- Personalised levels of academic and teaching support from University tutors and school mentors
- Support for your NQT year
- A beautiful, riverside cathedral city with around 60 partner schools
Our professional studies programme has been written by Headteachers across Exeter, responding to their requirements for NQTs. We cover important areas early on, such as SEND, Inclusion, Assessment and Behavioural Management. These studies are interwoven with your school-based experience, allowing you to embed theory into your practice. Our sessions ensure that trainees have the skill sets desirable to our schools, as described by one of our Federation Heads: "We recently interviewed several trainees from a range of providers for an Early Years post. The quality of the trainees from Exeter Consortium, in terms of depth of knowledge, practical experiences and their ability to articulate their learning was outstanding. All in all, it was clear that the course is significantly strong in preparing teachers for entry into the profession."
Training begins in your 'Home School' in an EYFS setting where you are based for two terms. Here you will develop an understanding of how teachers foster a positive learning environment right from the start. In the Spring term, you will experience a year 1 or 2 setting. You will spend much more time in school compared to a conventional PGCE programme. Initially, you will begin with 40 - 50% time in class, observing and teaching. This increases over the year, and by the end of the Summer Term, you will be teaching 80-85% or more, in readiness for your new teaching post in September!
You will complete three assignments towards completion of the PGCE with Bath Spa University, rated Outstanding for ITT, who visit us at our Exeter site. Bath Spa also provide regular tutorials.
Built into our programme is a focus on well being; our cohort is kept small purposefully, so we can offer personalised 1:1 support throughout the year.
Applicants are encouraged to make contact with the office by 'phone or email and are welcome to meet informally with an adviser before submitting an application. Interviews are held in one of our schools by the Headteacher (or Deputy)and one of our advisers, and include:
- A welcome and introduction with a tour of the school
- A short teaching experience (prepared in advance)
- A brief and fun group task
- An informal interview
We are committed to making interviews as stress-free as possible - recognising how challenging they can be! We find that candidates do really enjoy the event, finding out more about us and our programmes in a relaxed and informal setting. One applicant said "The interview process for the Exeter Consortium PGCE was such an enjoyable day. We were welcomed with tea and coffee, and given a moment to meet everyone before the day begun. It was a great mix of interview combined with a workshop, and it's that kind of organisation that made me feel the most comfortable. It was an opportunity for me to show my best without showing off. The overall feeling of the day was that Exeter Consortium wanted to meet ME for the skills that I had and not just another candidate to recruit."
All candidates are offered feedback as soon as possible following the interview. Successful candidates are then greeted with a Welcome Pack which helps them through the preparations required to start the course.
How school placements work
There is a mixture of schools and settings within our Consortium, with 6 secondary schools, around 50 primaries, 2 special schools and 1 FE College across the city. You will be placed within one of our Primary Schools, with age ranges of 4-11, or one of our nurseries, which range from age 2-5. Some of our schools also have nursery provision on site.
Each trainee will be placed in a 'home' school where they will be for the whole of the Autumn and Summer Terms, and a contrasting school for the Spring Term where they will gain experience of an opposite key stage.
Exeter is relatively compact and trainees can easily engage with all of the schools across the city conveniently, without having to make long journeys. We make every effort to try to place trainees within schools that are accessible for their circumstances.
Trainees come together as a cohort for the taught elements of the course each week, and the practical, school based learning dovetails into the academic course. The Consortium and its schools have an enviable track record in CPD and staff development and value the opportunity to prepare the next generation of outstanding teachers for their schools. The aim for us is to provide the best possible educational outcomes for all of Exeter's children. Many of our teachers are outstanding practitioners, keen to share their expertise with future colleagues. The excellent success of teacher training in Exeter is clear affirmation of their vision and hard work!
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
- Graduate Status or equivalent
- Passes at GCSE in English, Maths and Science at grade C

About the training provider
Exeter Consortium is a successful partnership of schools around Exeter, created by the schools themselves. We deliver a high quality, school-based programme, devised in collaboration with our headteachers. Central to our programme is pastoral support, with our personal touch being highly rated.
We offer a rich experience, having a contrasting mixture of schools for placements, consisting of a range of secondaries, around 60 primaries, a hospital school, special schools and FE College. The primaries offer great diversity, from schools of less than 100 pupils to rolls of more than 600, and from urban sites to small villages.
We demonstrate consistently high employment rates of above 95% over the last 4 years and are recognised by our headteachers as providing well-trained NQTs - nearly 100% achieve outstanding grades.
The major benefit of this route is that the Trainee has the opportunity, right from the start, to join an effective school and build practical experience. Trainees come together as a cohort for the taught elements of the course each week, which is delivered by Senior Leaders in Education and other excellent, current practitioners. A strong and supportive peer group develops, and life-long friendships are forged.
The Primary (3-7 and 5-11 plus Primary with Maths) programmes are offered in partnership with SWTT and Bath Spa University, an Ofsted rated Outstanding provider for ITT, who deliver the Masters element of the courses on site, here in Exeter.

About the accredited body
SWTT SCITT was formed in 1993 with the remit of providing high calibre teachers for Exeter and South West Schools. We pride ourselves in continuing with this challenge, but also with producing teachers who teach across the country. One of the great strengths of SWTT is our ability to personalise the QTS programmes and provide one to one support and challenge for each of our trainees. SWTT is based along with Exeter Consortium at West Exe School in Exeter, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, where some of our training sessions are held.
Training with disabilities and other needs
We believe in creating a supportive environment for all. We provide confidential information, guidance and support to students who have a specific learning difficulty or disability, or a medical condition.
All successful applicants to the programme will be taken through an occupational health check, so that we can then create an access plan to best support them. We will work with all applicants to make adaptations to support their access to the programme. For example, this can include using coloured paper and slides for students with dyslexia, considering the best placement schools to support students with accessibility issues and other disabilities.
We have built wellbeing training into our programme as we believe this is important for all our trainees.
