About the course
Our School Direct programme lasts for the full academic year (September - July), during which time successful applicants will be based in a host school from our partnership of schools, with excellent experience in ITT, alongside attending the full range of PGCE lectures at the University of Hull. Our trainees attend 100% of the PGCE taught course at the University of Hull.
In the Autumn term trainees begin the course in early September and typically have a week to ten days in their host school before beginning the PGCE lectures at Hull University. The Autumn placement consists of Mondays and Tuesdays in the host school, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the university. During this time trainees will be engaged in a number of tasks to enable them to understand the different aspects of teaching in a modern classroom, as well as attending lectures at the University of Hull for subject knowledge.
In the Spring term trainees will complete a contrasting placement in an Early Years classroom in another one of our partner schools for seven weeks. This is a full time placement in school where trainees take on up to 50% of the teaching commitment.
Following this the trainees return to the university for a couple of weeks to resume PGCE taught course before returning to their original host school.
Throughout each term there are a series of assignments that trainees are required to pass in order to achieve the PGCE qualification and 60 credits towards Masters level.
In the Summer term trainees complete their final teaching placement in their host school for ten assessed weeks (until early July). From this final placement, recommendations for Qualified Teacher Status are agreed.
The trainee stays at their host school until the end of the academic year, to prepare for their journey as a newly qualified teacher.
Interview process
Successful applicants will be invited to interview via email by Andrea Tonks, Teaching School Manager. All of our interviews take place at Molescroft Primary School, Beverley (lead school for Riding Forward TSA).
Interviews will consist of an activity involving children and a formal interview.
We are looking for candidates with as much relevant experience of being in a school as possible, and evidence of why teaching is for them.
Applicants who demonstrate a passion for working with young people and a strong desire to teach.
Applicants who display a good level of spoken and written standard English.
How school placements work
Successful applicants will be based in two schools throughout the academic year.
The main school that the trainee will spend their time in is referred to as the 'host school'. Once the applicant has been offered a place on either our Early Years or Primary course, and has accepted, then discussions will take place as to where their host school will be.
We try to find a host school that is as near to the trainee's home as possible, however, the most important factor is that it is a 'good fit' between the trainee and the school.
The contrasting placement school will not be organised until the Autumn Term, but again, we try to keep any travelling to a minimum. Please note, however, that the East Riding is a large rural county and some element of travel will be required. It is ideal if you have your own transport available.
