A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £22,000
  • a bursary of £20,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

About the training provider

The Hermitage Academy is an outstanding 11-18 academy with a history of Initial Teacher Training and teacher professional development. We have expereinced mentors in every department, and access to Specialist Leaders in Education in every subject area. We work with Durham SCITT in order to deliver a programme resulting in a PGCE with QTS.

At the Hermitage Academy we put students at the heart of what we do and the greatest impact on their success is our staff. We have an outstanding staff here at the Hermitage and pride ourselves on recruiting and retaining the very best practitioners in the region. Many of our staff, joined us through our ITT programme or as NQTs and have gone on to middle and senior leadership roles through our in-house programme of support and professional development. We are very much looking forward to working with a new cohort of future teachers and leaders and hope you will join us!

About the accredited provider

Durham SCITT has been training teachers since 2005. It’s the personal attention we give to our trainees which makes this a great place to learn. We pride ourselves on the personal approach. We know there is no such thing as a “typical trainee” so we don’t provide a one-size-fits-all course. We will help you to grow and become a great teacher. Our Subject Specialist programme was recognised by Ofsted as outstanding and highly innovative practice. All trainees have access to purpose built learning centre in Newton Aycliffe - it ensures you get off to the best start in you career.
