About the course
This programme is offered on a full-time or on a part-time basis. The course will equip trainees to teach Physics to students aged 11 to 16 but may give experience of Key Stage 5 (A level) teaching. Please note that due to National Curriculum requirements, all science trainees will be required to complete some teaching across all three sciences.
This is a school based training programme. Full-time trainees will spend 4 days a week in school completing 'on the job' training. One day a week (Wednesday) will be spent together will all Secondary trainees completing 'professional studies' where more in-depth learning can be made into teaching pedagogy. This will cover a variety of topics including behaviour management, lesson planning, assessment for learning etc.
Part-time trainees will spend 2 days a week in school in terms 1 and 2 with the third day (Wednesday) completing professional studies. In term 3 trainees will spend 3 days in school in addition to the Wednesday professional studies sessions. In term 4, trainees will spend 4 days in school (no professional studies). Part-time trainees will gain QTS at the end of term 4 (December).
Full-time trainees can opt for the QTS only programme or the PGCE programme which requires assignments to be written at Masters level. These assignments are more research-based whereas the QTS assessments are more reflective, basing your work on your own classroom practice.
Our PGCE is accredited by Kingston University but there is no need to visit Kingston, as you will have access to all the online resources and assessors will visit trainees to introduce assignments.
The PGCE programme is not available to part-time trainees although we can offer you some advice as to how to achieve a PGCE should you wish to do so.

We operate a one-day interview process comprising of:
- face to face interview
- teaching activity with a group of students
- written test designed to demonstrate your fundamental English and Maths skills
- written subject specific paper designed to test your knowledge of the syllabus

How school placements work
Successful full-time candidates will be placed in a main placement school for two and a half terms (part-time trainees will be in a main placement school for 3 and half terms). All trainees have a mentor within their department for support. The focus will be on teaching students from age 11 to 16.
When selecting a main placement school, we take into consideration the following:
- which of our partner schools would like a trainee in the subject (and where relevant, are able to support a part-time trainee)
- the ability of our partner schools to support a trainee based on the trainee's strengths and weaknesses
- distance between the trainee's home and the placement school
- any links that trainees may have with schools
The placement school selection is usually done in conjunction with the trainee and confirmed following a visit by the potential trainee to the suggested school.
A second, minor placement will take place in the first half of the Spring term in a contrasting school to the main placement school. Again, all trainees have a departmental mentor for assistance. For part-time trainees, the second placement will take place in the first half of the fourth term (September to October half term).
Trainees are expected to be in their placement school before the school day begins and to stay for some time after school to attend necessary meetings etc.
On Wednesdays all trainees will come together for Professional Studies sessions - these mainly take place at George Abbot School but could take place in any of our partner schools.
All candidates will also spend one week in an SEN setting as well as occasional days in other settings, with advance notice given.

The course fees for 2020/2021 are as follows:
The fee is £8300 for those following the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) only programme.
The fee is £9250 for those following the PGCE programme whereby a PGCE qualification will be gained as well as Qualified Teacher Status.
The fees remain the same whether you are training to teach on a full-time or part-time basis.

You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you'll also get early career payments of £2,000 each in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Physics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

*Where the degree is not related to the chosen teaching subject, candidates must hold an A level in the subject and will be required to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme

In 2013, alongside an educational charity, we created an entirely new route into teaching for candidates with PhDs, called Researchers in Schools. We were also selected to pilot a part-time school-based training route for shortage subjects in September 2016 which will continue in September 2020.
