About the course

The School Direct Programme is designed to ensure that the trainee has a diverse school based experience that allows them to develop their skills in school based settings. You will be placed in schools within the Teaching School Alliance for your main and second placements.

Successfully completing all aspects of the course will gain you QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). You may work towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which also carries 60 M level credits that may be used towards a subsequent master’s degree.

Interview process

You will be interviewed by two members of the Valentines Teaching School team.

The interview process may include some or all of the following activities:

Subject knowledge activity

Delivery of a half hour teaching activity to students

Written task

Interview by panel

You may be asked to attend a follow up interview at the partner university

How school placements work

For the majority of your time with us you will be in school for five days a week with some days spent at university. You will be assigned an experienced mentor in school who will support you by meeting with you weekly, by observing lessons, by drawing up a suitable timetable that will develop your skills and broaden your experience. As a salaried trainee you will have a timetable and be responsible for assigned classes. You will be placed in a school within the Teaching School Alliance for your main placement. In addition to the main placement you will also be placed in a second school in the Spring term before returning to your principal school. This will enable you to experience a different environment and work with different pupils. We aim to ensure that student teachers have the opportunity to teach across the 11-18 range at some point within their two placements. You will have the opportunity to spend a day or a short placement at a special school to learn about behaviour management strategies with more challenging students.

Salary

Trainee teachers are paid according to the Unqualified Teacher Pay Scale and the location of the employing school. The minimum you can expect to be paid is point 1 on the scale.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Requirements

Qualifications

Good Honours degree (2:2 or above) from a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution or an equivalent qualification from abroad.

GCSE grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject. Alternatively, we will accept equivalency tests from www.equivalencytesting.com only in the above subjects.

Please note that the science equivalency test MUST be in combined science. All equivalency tests must be passed by 1st September 2019. QTS Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy must be passed before 1st September 2019 or you will not be able to commence on the programme.

Personal qualities

We are looking for the following qualities and attributes:

• enjoyment of your subject and the ability to communicate this to young people to stimulate interest in lessons and promote learning

• the capacity to be reflective and evaluate your teaching and students’ learning

• adaptability and the ability to work under pressure

• good inter-personal and team working skills

• good attendance, punctuality and professionalism

• good spoken and written English

• previous experience of working with children and young people

• familiarity with recent educational developments and trends

Other requirements

As trainees receive a salary and are responsible for classes whilst on training, they generally require a greater amount of experience than trainees on the non-salaried tuition fee route. It is an expectation that applicants would normally have at least one year's experience in the school sector.
