About the course
As a partnership we have invested both time and money in ensuring that our student-teachers have the best possible foundations to become outstanding teachers. The key philosophy behind our programme is its flexibility for students to study Mainstream, SEND or both.
You will be allocated a ‘host’ school where you will complete school experience days and your Beginning and Extending placements. Your Beginning placement takes place in the 2nd half of the Autumn term and lasts for 4 weeks. Your Developing placement takes place in the first half of the Spring term and lasts for 5 weeks. This will be in a different school and contrasting key stage. Your final Extending placement lasts for 10 weeks and starts in the 2nd half of the Spring term and continues through the Summer term.
When you start in September, up until the start of your first 4 week placement in the second half of the Autumn term, you will be gaining school experience in your host school for two days per week (Monday & Tuesday) and at Tor View for three days per week (Wednesday to Friday).
At Tor View you will be working towards your PgCE modules of Raising the Achievement of Children and High Quality Learning & Teaching with a University Lecturer. You will have an assignment to submit for each module.
In addition you will study Core Units in English, Maths, Science, PE, Behaviour for learning, Assessment Data Tracking, Computing, Creative Teaching and Learning, Physical Development, Child Development, Lesson Planning, Art, Music, English SPAG, History, Geography, D&T, Modern Foreign languages, RE , Classroom Management, Partnerships, Medium Term Planning, ASC, Interview Techniques, Transitions.
These units introduce you to key concepts and principles in teaching and learning, whilst aiming to the development of knowledge skills and understanding in core areas of teaching: curriculum design, assessment, planning, managing classroom behaviour and behaviour for learning and evaluation. The units also aim to develop your ability to reflect on your own practice, professionalism and underpinning values.
We are also pleased to offer a range of ELIP modules that are additional to the core programme, and unique to ELIP. These fall broadly into SEN / Mainstream categories, although you are encouraged to select options which appeal, irrespective of whether you have chosen the SEN or Mainstream route into Teaching.

Once you have successfully submitted your application, we will contact you to arrange an interview. Usually we hold interviews every 2 weeks, and we would always give you 7 days notice to ensure that you had adequate time to prepare.
Your invite to interview letter will set out all the requirements for the interview day, including a brief for your mini teach. Usually interviews are held at Tor View, but occasionally we conduct the mainstream mini teach element with one of our local partner primary schools.
At the interview you will be required to conduct a mini teach session with 3 pupils either from a mainstream or SEND primary school. The brief will reflect the year group of the children. Your mini teach will be observed by at least two professionals, usually the Deputy Principal from Tor View and another Head Teacher or Deputy Head Teacher from the alliance.
Following a successful mini teach you will complete a literacy assessment designed to reflect your ability to write at Level 7. Finally you will have a face to face interview with the same people who observed you conduct the mini teach.
Depending on the number of people being interviewed, will determine how long this process takes, it can be anything from 3 – 5 hours.
We will also ask to see your ID, certificates ask for details of how you are getting on with the NCTL Skills Tests.
How school placements work
East Lancashire Inclusion Partnership is a dynamic alliance with over 30 schools involved in providing support to initial teacher training. These schools are made up of a mix of mainstream and SEND schools. We are based in Rossendale, and have placement opportunities not only throughout the Rossendale Valley, but also Burnley, Pendle, Hyndburn and Blackburn. We work with a network of Special Schools throughout Lancashire and Cumbria and have worked with other Teaching School Alliances in providing placements out of area to assist students with their travel commitments.
When placing students we take a number of factors into consideration, including travel distance and whether you are using a car or public transport. We try to place students close to home, but this is not always possible. On average our students would not travel more than 30 – 45 minutes to get to placement, although many are much closer than this and we would ask that you are prepared to travel for 90 minutes, depending on the particular circumstances.
You are of course able to secure your own placement if you wish. We would ask that it is a good or outstanding school, and we would need to follow up to ensure that the appropriate documentation is completed.
During the course you will have 3 placements. Mainstream students will have 3 mainstream placements if they wish, although we encourage people to have a special school placement as their Developing placement. SEND students will also have 3 placements, Beginning and Extending will be in a special school and Developing will be in a contrasting key stage in a mainstream school.
• Beginning placement : 4 weeks long, 2nd half of the Autumn term.
• Developing placement : 5 weeks long, 1st half of the Spring term.
• Extending placement : 10 weeks long, 2nd half of Spring term & Summer term.
Your Beginning and Extending placements will take place in your host school. You will also be in your host school for 2 days a week outside of your official placements.

To be eligible you will need:
- GCSE Maths Grade C or above (or equivalent)
- GCSE English Grade C or above (or equivalent)
- GCSE Science Grade C or above (or equivalent)
A suitable degree, comprising at least 300 credits, at least 60 of which must be at Level 6.
You will also need to pass the NCTL skills tests prior to starting on the course.

About the accredited body
Many of the schools in our alliance are partner primary's to the schools in the Pennine Lancashire SCITT. ELIP believes passionately in cross-phase collaboration, and works closely with partners in the SCITT to ensure that student teachers understand the links between SEND, KS2 and KS3. Where possible, joint workshops in areas such as Safeguarding, Child Development and Behaviour Management exist to allow student teachers from across all phases of primary and secondary education to meet and share best practice.
Training with disabilities and other needs
At the heart of ELIP is a specialist learning community. Our expert Practioners' assist local primary and secondary schools to support pupils with a wide range of disabilities and special educational needs. This extends to our student teachers, who we work very closely with to enable them to succeed.
As a special school, the Equality Act 2010 & SEN Disability Act 2001 are very important to use. Our training facility is fully accessible for wheelchair users, and we have access to in-house Hearing and Visual Impairment Specialists who would be able to provide a detailed report to assist us with making the necessary adjustments to meet an individuals needs.
We have experience of supporting students with Dyslexia. Our School Direct Lead Tutor / Mentor is an accredited Dyslexia Specialist. We are able to work with students on access arrangements for skills testing and assignments, in addition to ensuring that they have the tools they need to achieve.
All student teachers are assigned a personal tutor. If you are experiencing any mental health problems, we would advise you to discuss this with your personal tutor so that the correct support can be arranged.
