Do you want to play a part in the personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of young people? If so, how about becoming an RE teacher?
We’ve designed our highly-rated PGCE Secondary Education in RE, so that you explore a variety of approaches to delivering quality RE and learn how to confidently devise and deliver interesting and inspiring lessons to pupils of all secondary ages and abilities.
You will begin the course by understanding the needs of individual learners, learning to notice, understand and implement key teaching strategies.
Working with individual groups of pupils in school, you'll gradually building up to the teaching of whole classes in the second phase.
This will involve fostering the appropriate levels of learning in pupils, corresponding to the requirements of the Teachers' Standard.
We draw on a broad range of teaching and learning strategies, including ICT workshops, videos, visits and hands-on practical work with artefacts and resources, as well as more traditional teaching methods.
You will look at the role of a religious education teacher, working with faith communities to look at the aims of RE in spiritual and moral development and you will use a variety of approaches towards teaching, including relationships with ICT and citizenship, to create a better learning experience for students.
We believe that experience is not enough - what is vital is to be able to unpick and reflect on experiences.
You will deconstruct classroom learning activities into their constituent parts, and then build them up again and implement them in the classroom. Your personal tutor will meet with you throughout the year to discuss your progress, and your subject mentor will support your development towards QTS at your placement.
The course has QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) built in and students will apply for a position as a secondary school teacher during the course of their studies and teaching practice.
You will be required to deliver a 20 minute mini-teach to pupils at interview. We are looking at how candidates prepare resources to promote effective learning; how they have decided to engage their pupils; potential development of a strong classroom presence and ability to reflect on their lesson.
All candidates must demonstrate professional suitability through interview and must obtain medical and enhanced DBS clearance according to established university procedures.
Candidates attend an interview with a panel of staff who deliver the School Direct Programme. There is also a written task to assess literacy ability, communication skills and basic understanding of teaching young people.
How school placements work
Placements start in the first week of the first term of school. For the first 2 weeks trainees carry out lesson observations. After that time trainees will then start to deliver starters or plenaries and team-teach some groups. Subject mentors then judge when trainees can start planning and delivering lessons. This first placement lasts until the end of the winter term in December. The second placement starts in January and lasts until late June.
We aim to allocate placements that are geographically near to the place of residence of the trainee, however this is not always possible. We also try to ensure that your 2 placements are varied and give you the opportunity to teach sixth form as well as pupils aged 11-16 years old.
As part of the programme, our trainees visit primary schools and sixth forms to ensure that they have an awareness of the different educational phases.

Most students choose to take a student loan. If you are taking a student loan, you won't have to do a thing - the Student Loan Company will pay your fees directly to the university. For more information, please see the Student Loans section.

You’ll get a bursary of £9,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

Tuition fee loans
Full time students from the UK can apply for a tuition fee loan up to £9,250 for 2018/19. This is paid directly to the university each year, and is not dependent on your household income.
When applying for your student loan, you will need to contact the relevant student funding authority for the area in which you live. Your loan application is likely to take around 2 months to finalise so it is important to complete your application as soon as possible. We recommend completing your application by the end of May (new students) or June (continuing students) to avoid any delays in receiving your funding.
A minimum UK 2:2 honours degree or recognised equivalent qualification is required. Your degree must contain evidence of a substantial and appropriate level of subject knowledge.
If you don't have an undergraduate degree but do have a Masters or other higher qualification, your application will be considered on a one-to-one basis.
GCSE grade C or above in English language and mathematics or recognised equivalent qualifications. Preference will be given to those who hold these qualifications at the point of application.
Evidence of motivation and appropriate professional values. A strong personal statement conveying an enthusiasm for the subject, for working with young people and for teaching and learning.
Evidence of a satisfactory level of literacy on the application form and a satisfactory personal statement.
Evidence of the potential to work at Masters level.
A satisfactory academic (University) or a satisfactory professional reference if it is more than 5 years since academic work.
A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) background clearance check prior to starting the course.
Satisfactory Occupational Health medical check prior to starting the course.
About the training provider
The Lancaster and Fylde Schools’ Alliance is comprised of 4 schools in the Lancaster area, and 4 schools based on the Fylde coast. These schools have been chosen to be part of our alliance as they offer our trainees a comprehensive and supportive environment in which they flourish as teachers. We have committed, enthusiastic and experienced mentors, and an outstanding team of practitioners who have proven success ensuring the best training and experiences for our trainee teachers.
Due to the geographic location of our partner schools, we are able to offer placements within 2 hubs ( north and south of Lancashire). The close proximity of our schools is beneficial to our trainees as travel time is kept to a minimum.
Being a partnership of local schools allows the Lancaster and Fylde Schools’ Alliance to have great relationships with our students and an increased amount of time mentoring our trainees with their progression into teachers of the future. Trainee feedback for our alliance schools makes reference to the support and encouragement given to our trainees during their training.
It is also important to note that our trainees will receive a PGCE teaching qualification, giving them more opportunities when they begin your teaching career. Our trainees complete assignments which are assessed at masters level by their University of Cumbria tutor. The assignments contribute 60credits towards a Masters in Education.
The diverse nature of the FSA schools will benefit all trainees as you will experience working in a wide variety of teaching environments.
About the accredited body
We have a long standing partnership with the University of Cumbria which has been highly successful in providing a quality experience for our School Direct trainees.
Our PGCE Secondary is fully compliant with the Department for Education (DfE) requirements and has additionality in that we can evaluate our training programme to match our trainees' needs. Throughout the year we offer bespoke training that reflects the knowledge gaps of our trainees, if for example, our trainees are lacking in an understanding about English as an Additional language (EAL), we then deliver additional training sessions in this area.
