About the course
We are committed to delivering a comprehensive and bespoke training experience and supporting the development of the next generation of teachers and school leaders.
This programme is highly supportive of the realities of the modern classroom.
Your training will be divided between time spent at UCL and teaching experience in local schools. During the placements you will gradually be introduced to teaching; spending some time observing lessons, working with small groups and individuals in the classroom, leading activities, team teaching and then building up to about 10 hours of whole class teaching per week. There is a comprehensive programme of mentoring, training and support delivered by the school and UCL.
As well as the school-based support from your subject mentor there is also a team of dedicated UCL tutors who will deliver training and fully support your school placement experience.
This course aims to prepare you to:

Become successful form tutors and collaborative colleagues.

There will be two interviews
One will be at the lead school and if successful you will be recommended for a second interview at UCL
The interview process may include some or all of the following activities:
Subject knowledge activity (set before interview day)
Delivery of a half hour teaching activity to students
Interview by panel

We do not give automatic feedback to all candidates rejected at interview. This is due to the large numbers of interviews that we carry out and the additional workload involved in feeding back to candidates.
We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview
How school placements work
Most placements will be within our alliance of 14 secondary schools which includes community schools (maintained and academies), faith schools, boys and girls grammar schools and an independent school. We can also offer opportunities to complete some of your training in special schools or a 14-19 alternative provision to widen your experience of different learning environments.
All of our schools are geographically close, with most being within the London Borough of Redbridge which means that trainees can easily engage with more than one school in the partnership. We do look at home addresses and journey times when considering placements.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £28,000
- a bursary of £26,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Geography or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

“UCL requires a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree and GCSEs in English Language and Maths (for Secondary programmes) plus Science (for Primary programmes) at grade C/5 or above. UCL does not accept ‘additional’ or ‘applied’ GCSE subjects. For equivalency testing UCL will only accept tests from (www.equivalencytesting.com).

We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject and have a desire to share that with young people of all abilities in the secondary age range. You need to want to make a real difference to young people’s lives. You should be resilient, have the potential to be able to communicate with an audience and be able to develop positive professional relationships with young people and colleagues. We want you to be able to continually reflect on their practice and respond positively to feedback. The best teachers are learners themselves.

North East London Teaching Alliance (NELTA) is a large teaching school alliance of 20 schools. Beal High School is the lead school.

We offer teacher training places for both the tuition fee and salaried routes to Qualified Teacher Status.
For tuition fee routes routes we work with King’s College London, UCL and NELTA as our accredited providers.
For our salaried route the accredited provider is NELTA (the operating name of teacher training provided by the Beacon Multi-Academy Trust)
