About the course
The programme lasts for twelve-months - from 1 August to 31 July, whilst a trainee’s Contract of Employment is from 1 September to 31 August.
A trainee’s programme is individual and school circumstances vary. Training is school led in partnership with The Consortium who facilitate the additional taught sessions, at which attendance is expected and for which employing schools agree to release trainees – these will take place at either Everton Nursery School and family Centre, Liverpool, The Heath Business Park in Runcorn or in one of our Partner Schools.
Trainees will be required to produce a Portfolio of Evidence linked to the Teachers’ Standards. There are no written assignments. There is regular, sustained classroom observation of trainees with feedback (including weekly use of Lesson Observation Schedules during the solo timetable period).
The teachers in training will be required to teach upwards of 30% after the Induction
period. The percentage of teaching depends on the confidence of the trainee and the advice given by their School Based Tutor (SBT) during their Weekly Meetings. Throughout the 12 months, the amount of teaching time will increase incrementally, from 30% (of an NQT’s timetable) after
induction, to 90% by the end of the training year. The QAT works with the SBT to evaluate the trainee's progress, based on their evidence of how they have met the Teacher's Standards.
By the end of the programme, the trainee must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach across the full age and ability range of their chosen age range. Quality assurance, pastoral and administrative support and confirmation of QTS, upon successful completion of the programme, are all the responsibility of The Consortium as accrediting provider.
All candidates will undergo an interview with the Consortium. An Employing School must be willing to employ the candidate, for at least the duration of their training, as an Unqualified Teacher.
Interviews will be in two stages. One to confirm eligibility to teach and suitability for the school, and the other to confirm suitability for the programme
Places may be available for some candidates in one of the Partnership schools – in this case successful candidates at the Consortium Interview. without an employing school, may be required to undertake a second interview with that school.
All Application Forms will be examined by a Short Listing Panel, who will select the most suitable candidates for interview based on the criteria for selection and the completion of the Application Form.
Interview Panels (usually three), consisting of trained representatives from the Consortium plus school representatives, will examine potential candidates based on agreed criteria.
Interview Panels will agree on a ranking of candidates.
The rankings will be moderated by the Consortium Training Manager, and the most suitable candidates will be allocated to the available places.
Successful candidates will be notified and asked to accept a place.
The nominated Employing School will be notified and asked to confirm their acceptance of the trainee. Once a candidate has accepted a place, they should inform UCAS of their acceptance via their website.
How school placements work
Each programme will prepare all trainee teachers to teach within one of the following age phases and engage with the expectations, curriculum, strategies and teaching arrangements in the age ranges immediately before and after.
• Ages 3 – 7, or Foundation / Key Stage 1
• Ages 7 – 11, or Lower Key Stage 2 / Upper Key Stage 2
• Ages 5 – 11, or Key Stage 1 / Key Stage 2
Each training programme should cover, at least, 4 school years.
Trainees must also spend approximately 6 weeks in an alternative setting (second school). A second school may be able to provide teaching experience in a school year that can’t be provided in a lead school. It is the trainee’s or employing school’s responsibility to find the second placement school.
The lead school will nominate a member of staff (School Based Tutor )to support the trainee in school – The Consortium will allocate a Quality Assurance Tutor to work with the trainee for the duration of their programme.
The salary will be calculated using the Unqualified Teachers' pay scales. There are no other fees for this course.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
An Honours Degree
English, Maths and Science GCSE Grade C (or equivalent)
- years career experience in any field
Though not necessary, quality UK Primary school experience is desirable

School Direct Tuition Route - This is a school-led training path where you train to teach on a course that adheres to your individual needs. This school-led programme has allowed the North Liverpool Teaching School Partnership to create a unique Early Years/KS1 (3-7 yrs) or Primary (5-11 yrs)course geared to give trainees the best start in their teaching career. Alongside North West Shares SCITT we offer high-quality school placements across our Teaching School Partnership. This one year full-time course ends with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) upon successful completion.
