About the course
Hands on experience – From day one trainees are immersed in school life, gaining experience and reflecting on learning. Trainees work with outstanding colleagues in classrooms on placements in different schools, and they experience special school education at Hazelbeck.
Trainees very quickly get to know and become part of our school and student communities; ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in this environment.
Stage one – Introduction to teaching
In your first five weeks you will spend 2 days per week at Leeds Trinity University, and 3 days per week in your placement school. You will take part in seminars and workshops that prepare you for your school-based training.
Subject knowledge and applied pedagogy
In these sessions, our subject teacher experts will give you a good understanding of what it means to teach your subject. You’ll study the school curriculum, and understand how other expert teachers have taught it successfully. You’ll also learn how to plan sequences of learning that address your pupils’ needs so that you can develop your practice and have a positive impact on their learning.
Stage two – Developing your knowledge
Your University-based training will comprise the same elements as stage one, but you’ll focus on building on the knowledge you’ve already developed to prepare for your next school-based training block. You’ll spend one week at university. Before your second placement, you’ll again spend time in a school for one week to observe and familiarise yourself with the routine and teaching practice.
Having developed and applied your subject and curriculum knowledge, you’ll spend several days at university during your placement, consolidating your practice and completing activities that will prepare for your teaching career. We also run a one-week conference for all trainees.

o Tour of school with Student Ambassadors
o Meet current ITT Students
o Lesson observation & Peer observation assessment with staff member for Senior Leadership Team
o Formal interview including 3 minute presentation at the start about a teaching & learning experience you think has worked well and why.
How school placements work
The Beckfoot School Direct Partnership is a collaboration between all schools in the Beckfoot Trust, including Hazelbeck, a forward-thinking secondary special school co-located with Beckfoot, and Immanuel College. All schools are located within a 20 minute drive of Beckfoot, making planning and experiencing placements easier. View a map of our school locations
You will have 2 placements: October - December & January - June.
The course fees for 2019/2020 are as follows:
A good honours degree (2ii or above and preferably single honours) with a significant proportion of Science.
GCSE Grade C (or accepted equivalent) English and Mathematics.
We offer our GCSE equivalency tests to those who have a conditional place on the course but do not already have these qualifications.
