About the course

We offer specialisms in General Primary, General Primary with Mathematics, Early Years, Special Needs or Key Stage 2. We provide a unique opportunity across Norfolk and Suffolk for trainees to immerse themselves in a diverse range of teaching and training experiences which by the final term are highly personalised.

The training comprises of 3 placements in 2 contrasting schools over the course of the year combined with 40 days in centre training.

The centre based training is provided by expert trainers, many of whom are still serving teachers. It covers all National Curriculum subjects and key aspects of primary education such as behaviour management, SEND and assessment. Trainees also have sessions focused on the two assignments and one presentation which contribute to their PGCE qualification (including 60 credits at M Level).

All trainees have a tutor who is committed to supporting each trainee over their training year. This includes visits to observe teaching and end of term progress interviews.

Interview process

The Primary Salaried SCITT team will be co-ordinating the recruitment process with their partnership school head teachers. You will lead a 30-minute teaching activity and be interviewed in a partnership school. If this this is successful, you will be invited to attend a task day.

At the task day you will undertake some short written tests to gauge your fundamental English and mathematics skills and some interpersonal tasks.

How school placements work

When applying for the salaried route, it is very advisable to have the support of a school that can offer you a placement, including meeting the necessary contribution to your salary. There may be a very small number of salaried places available through lead schools, however competition for these is likely to be very high.

Trainees spend approximately 29 weeks on school placement. Most of this is in the main placement school in the autumn and summer terms, with at least 6 weeks in the spring term in a contrasting school.

Salary

To be eligible for a place on the Salaried course you must have the support of a school who is willing to make contributions towards your salary.

As a guide, trainees are paid full-time on point 1 of the unqualified teacher scale.

Salaries will vary depending on which subject you are training in, number of hours taught and the length of your contract.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.

Qualifications

  • A UK first degree (or equivalent). Normally 2.2 or better (or equiv. 360 CAT points).
  • GCSE English Language Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent)
  • GCSE Mathematics Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent)
  • GCSE Science Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent)
  • Overseas qualifications must be assessed by NARIC.
  • Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy are not accepted.

Personal qualities

We are looking for committed, resilient individuals who are ready to undertake an exciting but rigorous training year. We are interested in people who are passionate and enthusiastic about children's learning and have a desire to promote the best outcomes for all children. You need to be open to constructive feedback and see it as a tool to help you to achieve your potential by the end of the year. You must be organised and self-motivated as although you will be well supported, you also need to be focused on the commitment involved within this training year.

Other requirements

  • Confirmation of clear enhanced DBS check before you start the course. This check is carried out by your placement school but Primary SCITT do need to check your identity before starting the course.
  • Meet the 'Fit to Teach' criteria. This is organised by your placement school as part of their pre-employment checks
  • If an applicant has lived overseas for more than three months in the past five years in line with safer recruitment practice they will be required to provide a certificate of good conduct from that country.

About the training provider

White Woman Lane School has been a lead school offering school direct salaried and tuition placements across our Partnership of Schools for a number of years. White Woman Lane School itself is part of the Nebula Federation which has six schools working together; a mixture of primary and junior schools, church and community schools, sharing strengths and resources and ensuring wider collective support for our schools. We are in partnership with the Suffolk & Norfolk Primary SCITT Salaried and Tutition PGCE programmes, both of which has an excellent local reputation for providing training of the highest quality. Suffolk & Norfolk SCITT is the biggest SCITT in the country. All trainees on this course will obtain the following qualification, QTS, and the PGCE with 60 Masters’ credits. Almost all trainees from 2017-18 are now working as newly qualified teachers in local partnership schools and whilst others have relocated successfully in other areas.

About the accredited body

The Suffolk and Norfolk Primary SCITT programme is a personalised, relational and ethical training provider. Primary SCITT has very high attainment and employment outcomes for trainees. On average 70% of trainees are outstanding and 95% of trainees are employed in local schools by the end of their training. Trainees are supported by school mentors and SCITT Tutors who have a range of experience in schools as members of senior leadership teams or classroom practitioners so have a wealth of experience to share with trainees. Primary SCITT is a highly personalised course which offers a range of opportunities to trainees.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT supports all trainees based on their individual needs. Recently this has included those with dyslexia, physical, hearing and visual impairments and mental health conditions. Plans are developed with trainees to ensure that they can fully access in centre training, operate effectively on school placement and complete written assignments.

Suffolk & Norfolk Primary SCITT has full disabled access as do all the schools in the partnership. However, applicants who would benefit from disabled access should let us know on their application so that they can be considered for placements at the most appropriate schools.
