About the course
This PGCE course prepares you to teach children in the 5 to 11 age range as a general primary teacher. It is a very practical course with around two-thirds of the time spent in schools, mostly working with teachers and pupils, and around one third spent on directed study, with partnership training in the University and school. Interviews take place at the lead school with a panel from across the partner schools. There is one interview which consists of a face to face interview, group activity and English and Maths test.
Following a successful interview, candidates are invited to spend a day in the potential placement school before a firm offer is made.
How school placements work
- One main placement at their base school and a second placement to enhance their experience with another age range.
- In negotiation with the candidate and the partner schools, placements are selected.
- We try to ensure placements are within easy reach of home.
- The age range will be 3 to 7 or 5 to 11.
- We partner with 8 Special Schools in our cluster across the county.

• GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics and Science at the time of application. Please see our list of accepted equivalents.
• An honours degree at a 2:2 classification or above
• Experience – We encourage you to gain some experience in schools as this is a good starting point for you to gain an interview for the Primary PGCE

About the training provider
The St Francis School cluster is unique as we offer all our places within Special Schools, which are spread across the County of Lincolnshire. All the schools are judged Outstanding or Good by OFSTED. There are few clusters similar to ours across the country. Across our cluster, we cater for a broad spectrum of pupils with SEND. Therefore, if you have some SEND experience and this is an area in which you may be interested to take up a career in teaching, then please look to join one of our teams. We offer bespoke opportunities with experienced mentors, in supportive environments, where all the young people come first. You would gain a wide range of skills both in your base school but also with some training delivered across all our schools and opportunities to visit the other schools. The wide range of skills you acquire would prepare you well to deliver quality lessons, suitably differentiated and resourced to meet the needs of all the young people we serve so they can thrive and reach their potential.
About the accredited body
We’re exceptionally proud that over the past 150 years, our commitment to first-class teacher training has remained consistent. Life after BGU is also extremely important to us and we offer many different methods of support for our trainees as they begin their teaching careers. We organise school placements for our trainees in a diverse range of partnership schools located across the East Midlands and ensure our teacher training both in schools and at the University allows trainees to develop an extensive understanding of every aspect of teaching.
Training with disabilities and other needs
We really care about all of our trainees and aim to support them all of the way through their studies, from application to graduation. Here at BGU we recognise that trainees may require additional assistance to engage fully with their studies due to a range of access needs. Student Advice plays a key role in co-ordinating services available to BGU’s disabled and sensory impaired students, and/or with specific learning differences or other access needs before and during their studies. In order to assess the level of support trainees may require, we use the legal definition of disability, which is wide ranging but includes:
• Specific learning differences including dyslexia
• Physical mobility difficulties
• Hearing impairments
• Visual impairments
• Persons requiring personal care
• Autistic Spectrum Disorders including Asperger’s Syndrome
• Mental health difficulties
• Medical conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes or asthma
