About the course
We have created a unique and exciting Initial Teacher Training Course
which will provide a solid foundation for teaching in the EYFS or Primary age range.
You will teach in two different schools in both key stages; The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1), in order to achieve QTS. you will need to teach in both EYFS and KS1. The majority of the year you will be placed in your employing school with an additional short placement in another.
You will learn alongside experienced teachers in school, complimented by a series of training days and twilight sessions provided by the Bristol Early Years Teaching Consortium (BEYTC) and Cabot Learning Federation (CLF).
We will offer you:
- A rigorous and quality assured ITT model that will equip you with the skills, knowledge and expertise to become an outstanding teacher
- A comprehensive package of high quality training days held in Bristol which promote a principled approach to teaching, creativity and reflective practice
- Bristol-based school placements for the majority of your study
- Trained school-based Mentors who support you during your teaching practice by building a relationship with you based on trust and respect, modelling good/outstanding practice for you to learn from, regular observations of your practice and constructive feedback to enable you to celebrate your achievements, challenge your thinking and identify next steps in your learning
- A Personal Tutor who supports your emotional well-being, providing tutorials throughout the year to discuss your progress, reviewing/ setting targets and working in partnership with your Mentor and the employing School, who take on a great deal of your training.
- Involvement in research and development activities to inform innovative teaching and learning.
You will have opportunities to:
- Develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to enable you to be a reflective, creative, confident teacher
- Be a courageous teacher, to take risks and learn from mistakes
- Learn within supportive and inspiring teams
- Build relationships with parents as equal partners
- Use the EYFS and National Curriculum guidance effectively to inform your planning, observations and assessments to ensure all children make outstanding progress.
- To develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare you for your first year of teaching as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) and beyond.
The initial interview process will take half a day. The panel will include the Initial Teacher Training Lead from BEYTC plus the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher from St Pauls Nursery School and Children’s Centre and a representative from CLF.
You will be asked to prepare a teaching activity and will spend a short time in a school being observed interacting with the children.
You will be given a title and asked to prepare and deliver a short presentation based on that subject on the day. You will be given the time and resources to enable you to present to the interview panel.
In addition, you will have a formal interview with questions that will help us get to know you, find out about your experiences and values around education.
As a prospective salaried trainee you will then have a second interview at your employing school. The school will design their own interview process.
There will be no tests on the interview day but you will be required to pass the Maths and English skills tests before any offer becomes unconditional
How school placements work
Bristol is an exciting, creative and diverse city to study in. Our partner schools are all situated in Bristol and offer the opportunity to learn in a rich and culturally diverse environment. This experience will support you in teaching children with English as an Additional Language (EAL), learning about different cultures and beliefs as well as challenging the assumptions and judgements that we might make about groups of people. This holistic approach will hold you in good stead to teach in a range of schools as an NQT and beyond.
We have built up strong partnerships with all our schools many of which we have worked closely with over the last five years. They consist of Nursery, Infant and Primary Schools.
We are committed to inclusion and take into consideration many factors when organising your alternate school placement including; distance from home to school, access to transport, preferred Key Stage where possible, ethos of individual schools, individual family circumstances, disability and additional learning needs. The salaried route is an intense year so we are committed to accommodating your needs as much as we can to ease unnecessary challenges.
During the year’s training you will have two placements. Most of the year will be spent in your employing school, with about nine weeks spent in another placement teaching another key stage.
Over the year you will teach in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 3 - 5 year olds and Key Stage 1 (KS1) 5-7 year olds.
To begin with you will be in school for a minimum of three days a week which increases over the year to four or five days, enabling you to become more involved in the life of the school.
This is a highly successful pattern enabling you to make links between theory and practice.
This route is most suited to people with substantial work experience and a school that is willing to support them through the training.
There are no fees for this route of training, unless you are choosing to buy the PGCE in addition which is £1,500.
You will be paid on point one of an unqualified teacher's salary, by the employing school supporting your training year.
There are no bursaries available for this course.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You should be a graduate (holding UK Degree or equivalent recognised qualification).
Degrees of 2:2 or above.
You will need Grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths and Science.
It is a requirement that all relevant QTS skills tests in English and Maths are successfully completed prior to commencement of training.
You need to demonstrate you have substantial work experience as well as experience in working with children (3-7 years old) in any capacity for a minimum of two weeks and This could be volunteering or paid employment e.g Schools, Nurseries, Play Group, Forest Schools or Adventure Playgrounds.

The CLF School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is in its third year as an accredited QTS provider, building on a very successful track record of delivering the School Direct Teacher Training route since its introduction in 2012 with Partner Provider and Sponsor UWE. CLF is committed to training and developing the future teaching workforce through designing and supporting innovative school-led programmes and ensuring that there is a supply of excellent teachers for schools, children and young people across Bristol and beyond.
