About the course
Our School Direct programme for Primary Teacher Training is an exceptional partnership of Forest Way Teaching School Alliance – FWTSA, the University of Derby and over forty local primary schools, with Outstanding and Good Ofsted ratings.
The majority of your time on this course will be spent in a local primary school, gradually taking on the role of class teacher, working closely with an experienced and skilled practitioner and mentor. In addition, nine weeks will be spent in an additional primary school, focussing on a different phase to experience the full range of the primary curriculum. Trainees can choose if they wish to train specifically in either primary or special schools, or to complete a combination of the two.
The course usually starts with your main placement on the first two inset day in August so the trainee feels part of the school from the outset.
One day each week your training will be split between FWTSA Hub sessions, held at a local school and time spent at the University of Derby. This training will focus on all aspects of teaching pedagogy, including lesson planning and evaluation, behaviour management, literacy and functional skills, learning theory, diversity and inclusion, equality, safeguarding and creative engagement. A carefully devised programme of training has been developed between the university and FWTSA which enables a very wide breadth of skills, knowledge and strategies to be taught across the two establishments.
Continuous assessment is used throughout the course and there are no examination papers set by the University. At assessment points throughout the course mentors grade the trainees against the eight teaching standards. Regular visits from a Link Tutor feed into these assessments. At any point in the year support is available from the programme manager at FWTSA and from the university if a trainee requires it.
Successful completion of the course leads to the award of PGCE and 60 credits at Masters level awarded by the University of Derby and Qualified Teacher Status.
Interviews will usually take place at Forest Way School and dates will be set as required throughout the year.
The interviews will comprise of:
- Group discussion on selected topics and current educational issues
- Individual interview
- Completion of a Literacy and Numeracy test
- Visit to class to meet pupils and teachers (where possible)
The interview panel will be a selection of:
- FWTSA School Direct Programme Manager
- FWTSA Lead Practitioner
- Senior teacher from an Alliance school
You will need to bring the following with you to the interview:
- Photo ID (Passport/Driving Licence)
- Original Degree Certificate (if available)
- Original GCSE Certificates for English, maths and science
- QTS Literacy Test Evidence (if available)
- QTS Numeracy Test Evidence (if available)
How school placements work
Your placements will be at Primary Schools within FWTSA.
Trainees will have the opportunity to work in a variety of schools with additional visits to other schools. You will spend the majority of the autumn and summer terms with your main school placement and the spring term with your second school placement. You will also have the opportunity to experience a Special School and a bespoke placement based on individual needs. Throughout the year there will be visits to local schools with a specific focus e.g. differentiation, phonics etc.

If you are training to be a teacher, you can get finance for your Initial Teacher Training PGCE.
Bursaries are also available – these don’t need to be repaid but they do vary according to the subject you’re planning to teach and the classification of your first degree.

You will need to be working towards or have gained the following:
- Minimum 2nd class degree
- GCSE at C/4 or above in English, maths and science, prior to application
- Professional Skills Test PASS for literacy and numeracy, by the start of the course
- Academic and professional references

You will be required to satisfy the University of Derby that you are physically and medically “fit to teach”.
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required and will be undertaken by the University of Derby before you begin the course.

Training with FWTSA
Forest Way Teaching School Alliance is based in the North West Leicestershire area and our accredited providers are University of Derby, University of Leicester and Loughborough University. We are now in our seventh year of delivering both Primary and Secondary School Direct PGCE.
Your placement will be at one of our Alliance schools. With 40+ primary, 6 secondary and 3 special schools, there is a huge array of expertise on hand which gives trainees a great breadth of opportunity.
Our teacher training is led by Programme Managers and a team of experienced practitioners offering a wealth of educational skills and knowledge, and are dedicated to the professional development of outstanding teachers. Working with our partners we have developed a programme which incorporates hands on work at schools, regular time at university and, where appropriate, practical, locally based training by skilled and experienced practitioners ‘doing the job’.
Our Alliance is progressive and proactive with a major focus on career development – from Initial Teacher Training, NQT Induction and training, right though to headship.
