About the course
The School Direct programme offers a unique 'hands on' teacher training opportunity. All of your training will take place within a school, with the exception of a number of days at an affiliated university.
You will spend the majority of your time at the designated training campus developing your teaching skills, together with approximately half a term working at a different/ alternative school to your ‘home school’, in order to widen your experience in a classroom setting, and make you more employable. Alongside this schedule, you will gain short blocks of experience at setting both before and area the age range you are training in, and a Special Educational Needs school*. These varying training opportunities will provide you with enhanced teaching experience across different demographics and academic abilities.
On average you will spend one day a week in a University/ Discussion-based setting, where you will focus on different teaching strategies including theory, planning aspects etc. The 'hands on' element of the School Direct programme offers invaluable experiences for you to develop successful and innovative teaching skills.
The duration of the School Direct programme is for one academic year (Sept to July). Throughout the academic year you will be assessed at four main review points, when your teaching practise will be reviewed and you will present evidence to demonstrate how you have addressed each of the Teachers' Standards. Alongside this you will be set M-level assignments from our University partner, enabling you to demonstrate your ability to reflect on current teaching theories alongside your own practise.
*Please be aware that trainees will be expected to arrange their own transport to different placements.
How we select our Associate Teachers:
Application forms are carefully screened to select applicants for interview. Schools will consider experience, academic qualifications including predictions, personal qualities and suitability for teaching. Additional interests and experiences will also be taken into account when selecting potential trainees.
Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Offers of places cannot be made until an interview has taken place. If an applicant cannot attend the specified interview date, an alternative date may be given, subject to places remaining available.
If invited to interview, applicants will be asked to complete a range of tasks, including:
*Teaching episode with a small group of pupils
*Formal panel interview presentation
We would also encourage all of our applicants to book and undertake their Skills Tests as early as possible.
How school placements work
When you apply for a training position with us, via UCAS, you should state the school which you wish to be placed in (your Home School). You will then be interviewed by members of the School Direct training team, plus representatives of the school you wish to be placed in. If successful, you will spend the majority of your School Based Learning days at the school you have requested. However, it is a requirement of the course, that you spend 30 days (6 weeks) in a contrasting placement.
The six week alternative placement will be organised by the Teaching School. Consideration will be given to travel/distance etc., and will ensure that you experience a different type of school setting, i.e. A faith school; A school with a contrasting Ofsted report to your home school; different demographic of pupils etc. This will ensure that you are not only more employable, but will help you to decide exactly what type/ area of school you wish to work in.

Financial support from the training provider
Fees for School Direct are £9,250.00. However, many subjects offer bursaries to cover/ help towards these fees.

Minimum Entry Requirements include:
Grade C/4 or above in GCSE English Language
Grade C/4 or above in GCSE Mathematics
Grade C/4 or above in GCSE Science – FOR PRIMARY APPLICATIONS
A 2:1 degree in your chosen subject (awarded by a UK higher education institution (or recognised equivalent qualification).
In some shortage subjects (as defined by the Government) a candidate may be accepted with a 2:2 if this is accompanied with relevant experience of working with young people.
Completion of Department of Education's professional skills tests.
Receipt of a satisfactory disclosure certificate issued by Disclosure and Barring Service.
We would expect all of our trainees to:
* Be creative, enthusiastic and able to work in a team
* Have a passion for your subject, and be committed to delivering this in the classroom
* Possess exceptional organisational skills
* Have the ability to reflect on practice and a drive to develop as a teacher
* Have communication skills. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are able to communicate clearly and grammatically in spoken and written English.
Applicants should also demonstrate an experience of and commitment to working with young people.
We are looking for enthusiastic and committed professionals willing and able to take responsibility for their personal professional development.
Applicants should indicate any additional experiences, hobbies or interests appropriate to the role of the teacher.
About the training provider
Wade Deacon Trust is a very experienced School Direct training provider.
All of our courses are managed by our Leader of Teacher Training, Jane Goulding, who has been awarded the University of Chester Outstanding Professional Mentor award, so we guarantee that you're in safe hands!
Every Associate Teacher is assigned a personal Subject Mentor, who will support your day to day teaching and will guide you through your training. We will ensure that you meet all of the Teachers' Standards, and will provide you with high quality experiences and access to the very best school-based training.
The School Direct programme consists of a structured training programme for the academic year, including an alternative school placement, enrichment opportunities and a full timetable of in-house training sessions.
As a member of staff you will participate in all aspects of the role of a teacher, including participation at Open Evenings, Parents' Evenings and educational visits that take place throughout the academic year, making this a realistic experience!
We place a large emphasis on ensuring that you are ready to secure your first teaching post, so offer you application and interview training, alongside developing your skills in the classroom.
Our exceptional reputation within the community, and close work with a variety of different settings, provides our Associate Teachers with rich and varied experiences. Previous Associate Teachers have benefitted from spending time in our local Special School; exploring EYFS provisions at local Nursery Schools, and working closely with organisations such as Widnes Vikings Rugby Club.
About the accredited provider
We work very closely with our accrediting provider, University of Chester, who deliver subject-based training days for our Associate Teachers, alongside the PGCE assignment-based element of the course.
University of Chester are an Outstanding provider, and offer excellent support for all of our Associate Teachers, with University Link Tutors visiting each Associate Teacher at every placement.
The Subject training days offered ensure that all Associate Teachers are equipped with the latest curriculum and examination requirements and expert knowledge for their specific subject.
