- to leave with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to begin your teaching career by taking three core modules.
This will be through three core modules:
Subject Studies: You will learn all aspects of how to teach your subject, including planning, teaching, assessment and classroom management.
Professional Studies: You will learn about working in classrooms and schools, and the broader context of teaching today.
Professional Practice: You will have opportunities for observation, practice and investigation in two contrasting schools.
Trainees will spend 4 days per week in school with 1 day per week being a training day. After the Summer half term, trainees will be in school 5 days per week.
You will be assessed in the following three modules:
Subject Studies (PG1) M level: A series of 2 assessments focussing on both educational theory and issues in your specialist subject – (1) 4000 word essay: January (2) academic poster: June.
Reflective Practice (PG2) M level: A reflective case study on an area of educational practice in your placement school(s) supported by a literature review (5000 word essay) - September and April.
Professional Practice H level: Meeting the Teachers’ Standards at a Good or Outstanding level. October, December, February, April, June
All assignments are submitted in electronic form.
Training days will mainly take place at the University of Warwick with some days being held at Bishop Challoner Catholic College.
Once an application has been submitted Alliance schools that have requested a trainee in a particular subject will decide if they want to interview. Please contact us to find out the latest list of schools with vacancies in particular subjects.
If more than one school wants to interview, the interview will be held at Bishop Challoner Catholic College and representatives from the interested schools will attend. When inviting applicants to interview they will be notified which schools will be represented on the interview panel.
If there is one school that wants to interview, the interview will be held at that school.
If the applicant is successful and several schools want to offer a place, the applicant can visit the schools and decide which school they prefer. This does not mean they have accepted a place at that school, it just means that they know that the Bishop Challoner offer on UCAS is for that particular school.
Interviews consist of:
- a short teaching session delivered to a small group of students - applicants will be informed at least 5 days before the interview about the topic, the age group/ability and the number of students
- a formal interview.
Detailed guidance will be provided about the interview process and what is expected when you are invited.
How school placements work
The main placement school for an applicant is discussed at interview, so that individual requirements can be taken into account. With most of our schools being located in or near the Birmingham area, travel time is not usually a problem.
Successful applicants will know which school will be their main placement when they are offered the place.
The second school placement takes place in the first half of the Spring Term, and this will be discussed with the trainee and their school mentor before any decisions are made.
Trainees are also required to spend one week (or equivalent) in a primary school.
This School Direct programme covers the 11-18 age group, with all trainees having the opportunity to observe and teach Sixth Form students.
Trainees on the salaried route will be paid on at least point 1 of the unqualified teacher scale, which in 2019/2020 is £17,208.
Your school will pay the University of Warwick tuition fees.
There will also be a tuition fee for the Masters Module of £2,000. It is up to the school whether they pay for this or the trainee pays. Most of our schools do provide the funding for this module. This will be discussed at the interview stage.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You have graduated, or are about to graduate from a British University or College of Higher Education with a 2:2 or above honours degree.
Overseas students with a qualification recognised as equivalent to a British degree in the above mentioned classifications are also eligible.
Suggested degree subjects: Computer Science, Engineering, ICT, Maths or a related discipline.
You need at least a grade 4 or grade C in GCSE(or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics.

A minimum of 3 years career experience, not necessarily in the education sector. However consideration will be given to applicants with slightly less career experience that show a strong commitment to teaching and have successfully worked in an educational environment eg as a teaching assistant or cover supervisor.
About the training provider
Bishop Challoner Teaching School Alliance (BCTSA) consists of over 60 schools, including 30 primaries, mainly located across the Birmingham area with some schools situated in the surrounding areas of Solihull, Dudley, Walsall and Worcestershire.
Being a large TSA, with a long and proven track record of training teachers, we can offer a large number of subjects and primary places all through the School Direct PGCE route. Every year we have large numbers of trainees who successfully pass the programme with Good or Outstanding grades. Having a large Alliance also means that the majority of trainees are employed in Alliance schools after completing their training year. Over the last few years we have had a 100% employment record after the training year.
There are experienced mentors in Alliance schools who will support you. They undertake training for their role every year with the University and with BCTSA. We have an ITT Support Team, which consists of experienced mentors from Alliance Schools who visit schools/trainees at least 3 times a year. This is in addition to the support provided by the University.

About the accredited body
The University of Warwick has been training teachers for over 50 years. Ofsted have rated Warwick as an "Outstanding" provider of teacher training.
Upon completing this course you gain 90 credits at master's level for Warwick’s MA in Professional Education. This allows you to fast-track to stage two of a master's degree, quickly progressing your professional development.
You will be taught and supported by highly experienced tutors, class teachers and school mentors who have national reputations for the quality of their training.
The course attracts a diverse range of age groups and backgrounds, creating a welcoming, inclusive and supportive community.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Within our Alliance of schools, BCTSA hopes to be able to provide a welcoming, accessible route into teaching for candidates with disabilities and other needs. The caring, nurturing focus of our mentors and trainers aims to look after those who are keen to progress through the programme and become classroom teachers. The University also provides a range of academic and professional support.
Previously we have supported trainees with a range of physical impairments, including timetabling of lessons to ground floor classrooms for those who cannot use the stairs; extra preparation time for those with dyslexia and autism, and extra support for those with mental health conditions.
By seeing our trainees as individuals, no two types of support are the same. By encouraging a caring and supporting ethos within our partner schools, we work with individuals to work out the best way to help them gain the most from their School Direct year and to start their teaching careers confident and ready to teach.
