- To leave with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to begin your teaching career by taking three core modules
Subject Studies: You will cover core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science) and non-core (Foundation) subjects. Foundation subjects are covered through 2 "taster” sessions for each subject: Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography/History, Music, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE) and PSHE.
Professional Studies: You will develop a good understanding of the key factors in successful learning and teaching. You will address central issues including planning, teaching, assessing and behaviour management.
Professional Practice: You will have opportunities for observation, practice and investigation in two contrasting schools. You will develop an awareness of your professional development, reflect on progress on school placements and set targets for successful completion of the programme.
You will also be asked to choose a specialism: Early Years, Special Educational Needs, English, Mathematics or Science. The specialism is a unique opportunity to enhance your subject knowledge and skills in a critical area of Primary education.
Trainees will spend 4 days per week in school with 1 day per week being a training day. After the Summer half term, trainees will be in school 5 days per week.
You will be assessed in the following three modules:
Subject Studies: coursework focusing on one aspect of practice in each of the 3 core subjects (Masters level assignment – 3,000 words; and looking at practice in one strand within your Specialism across a range of contexts (e-presentation – 2,000 words).
Professional Studies: Coursework focusing on a key issue and combining theory with your practice in schools (Master’s level assignment – 5,000 words.
Professional Practice: Meeting the Teachers’ Standards at a Good or Outstanding level.
Training days will mainly take place at the University of Warwick with some days being held at Bishop Challoner Catholic College.
Once an application has been submitted Alliance schools that have requested a trainee will decide if they want to interview. Please contact us to find out the latest list of schools with vacancies.
If more than one school wants to interview, the interview will probably be held at Bishop Challoner and representatives from the interested schools will attend. When inviting applicants to interview they will be notified which schools will be represented on the interview panel.
If there is one school that wants to interview, the interview will be held at that school.
If the applicant is successful and several schools want to offer a place, the applicant can visit the schools and decide which school they prefer. This does not mean they have accepted a place at that school, it just means that they know that the Bishop Challoner offer on UCAS is for that particular school.
Interviews consist of:
• an English written test (30 minutes)
• a short teaching session delivered to a small group of students. Applicants will be informed at least 5 days before the interview about the topic, the age group/ability and the number of students.
• a formal interview
How school placements work
The main placement school for an applicant is discussed at interview, so that individual requirements can be taken into account. With most of our schools being located in or near the Birmingham area, travel time is not usually a problem.
Successful applicants will always know which school will be their main placement when they are offered the place.
The second school placement takes place in the Spring Term, and this will always be discussed with the trainee and their school mentor before any decisions are made.
Trainees on the salaried route will be paid on at least point 1 of the unqualified teacher scale, which in 2018/2019 is £17,208.
Your school will pay the University of Warwick tuition fees.
There will also be a tuition fee for the Masters Module of £2,000. It is up to the school whether they pay for this or the trainee pays. Most of our schools do provide the funding for this module. This will be discussed at the interview stage.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You must have graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2:2 or above honours degree.
You need at least a grade 4 or grade C in GCSE(or equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics and Science.
You must pass the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy.

A minimum of 3 years career experience, not necessarily in the education sector. However consideration will be given to applicants with slightly less career experience that show a strong commitment to teaching and have successfully worked in an educational environment eg as a teaching assistant or cover supervisor.
