About the course
Our training model allows four days per week in schools and a weekly training day each Thursday. This training day is split between General Professional Studies (GPS) in the morning at the Braintree Arts Theatre and Subject Professional Studies (SPS) in the afternoon at one of our partnership schools. This ongoing training model allows you to explore something in theory and then try it out in practice the very next day.
You will have a main placement school which allows you to settle in fully into your department and become part of the teaching team. Pupils see you as their teacher and you gain a real insight into life in a school. A shorter, second placement in a different school (in February/March) then allows you to try ideas out and see another way of working. You will also have the opportunity to visit a primary school, a school for children with special educational needs and a school in challenging circumstances.
Trainees undertaking the ProfGCE will attend further training in the form of six Academic Days which will give you guidance on academic research and writing. You will also be able to access the online library of the University of Greenwich.
Mid Essex ITT will co-ordinate the recruitment process and it will involve a full day spent at their central offices at Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form. It will include a critique of a lesson, a short written test for literacy and participation in a group discussion. You will be expected to do a short presentation in front of a small group of Year 8 students and will be interviewed by staff from Mid Essex ITT and our partner schools. Not only is the day an excellent opportunity for you to show us your passion and relevant skills, it is a chance for you to meet the Mid Essex team and find out more about our course.
How school placements work
Mid Essex ITT works with over 20 schools across Essex, many of which have been working with them for almost 25 years. You will have the opportunity to work at two of these schools.
We aim to place you in a school which best suits your requirements. At your interview and assessment day, you will be asked to complete a form detailing which of our schools you would like to be placed at and we will try our best to place you at one of your choices. Early applicants will find it easier to be placed at one of their top choices so we do recommend applying as early as possible if you are interested in training in certain schools.
Our schools offer a range of experiences covering 11-16 or 11-18 with mixed and single gender teaching across the partnership.
- For the salaried School Direct teacher training course, there are no tuition fees.
- Trainee teachers on the salaried route will be employed by their placement school as an unqualified teacher. The starting salary for an unqualified teacher (UQ1) is around £17k.
- By the end of June, we expect all salaried trainees to secure a job as a Newly Qualified Teacher (starting salary of £21k upwards) which he will commence once training is complete.
- Please note that trainee teachers on the School Direct salaried route are not eligible to receive a government tax-free bursary or scholarship.
- Salaried teachers will teach no more than 15 lessons per week, across the four days in school.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
- a degree at classification 2:2 or above
- a standard equivalent to a GCSE grade C / grade 4 in Maths
- a standard equivalent to a GCSE grade C / grade 4 in English

Lyons Hall is the lead school in the Professional Learning Network (PLN), a Teaching School Alliance of over 50 primary, secondary and special schools
If you have a degree and would like to become a primary or secondary school teacher, PLN is here to support and guide you, every step of the way. We offer Initial Teacher Training through School Direct placements, a one-year programme in which candidates undertake on-the-job-training in at least two schools in Essex across the school year. The course is structured so that trainees gain hands on experience in schools from the very beginning and many of our trainees go on to work in one of the schools they trained in.
We are different to many other training organisations as we can support you with your induction as a Newly Qualified Teacher as well as with Continuing Professional and Leadership Development throughout your career.
You will receive support from experienced teachers to help develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to become a successful practitioner.
Trainees are encouraged to make the most of every opportunity that our strong partnership of schools offers and are well supported and challenged to achieve the very best outcomes that prepare them well for the start of their teaching careers.
About the accredited body
Mid Essex ITT (MEITT) is an outstanding school-based Initial Teacher Training provider (Ofsted, October 2017), working with 22 local schools in Essex and has been training teachers for almost 25 years.
MEITT is unique in that all the training is run by experienced, practising teachers. It is run by a small, friendly team who get to know all the trainees well and can offer personalised support. You will also have the support of a Course Tutor, subject mentor, Professional Mentor and Lead Subject Mentor.
Training with disabilities and other needs

Over the years we have supported trainees with disabilities and other needs to achieve at least good and often outstanding outcomes by the end of their training by taking in to account their individual needs and tailoring their training accordingly.
In the past we have provided extra support to trainees with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, hearing impairments, ME and other long standing illnesses who have successfully completed their training.
We have provided help with proof-reading assignments, providing handouts on pastel coloured paper and running “Breakfast Support” sessions and Wellbeing days. If you think you may require assistance with any of the tasks at our interview and assessment day, we are happy to chat in advance about how we can make them accessible for you.
