About the course
This course is designed to enable you to become a successful teacher of history. The SCITT offers trainees the opportunity to work with outstanding teachers and experienced practitioners from day one of the course. As this is a salaried route you will undertake the majority of your training in your already secured employment based school where you will spend your time in school working alongside highly professional and well qualified colleagues. Specific subject knowledge training and audits will enable you to build up a strong knowledge of the History curriculum for Key stage 3 and 4. Trainee timetables are designed to increase in size and complexity over the training year, but trainees are supported at all times to ensure a balance between challenge and support is met.
All trainees gain experience of both key stage 2 (upper primary) and Key stage 5 (post 16).
This route also enables the trainee to undertake an alternative placement in a contrasting setting.
To apply of this route you must have a minimum of two years of school experience within this subject area, ideally working as a Teaching Assistant given the intensity of the programme. Trainees are assessed through their mentor and by SCITT staff. Observations of teaching form a large portion of the assessment process, with a range of opportunities for trainees to reflect on their progress against the teachers’ standards (2013). Trainees reflect on a weekly basis, culminating in termly written reports produced jointly with mentors. This process is summarised through a moderation interview at the end of the course. Trainees are supported on this journey through a series of school based tasks to enable a thorough understanding of the teachers’ standards.
Throughout the course trainees receive face to face training in pedagogy and subject knowledge. This training is delivered by current practitioners and takes an evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning, enabling trainees to adapt their own learning for the context of their placement schools. Whilst the majority of training takes place at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, some training will take place in partner schools across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

Following an application that meets our criteria, the SCITT will arrange a recruitment day at a partner school. This day will included the following elements:
- A short pupil-based activity where we ask you to prepare and teach for around 15 minutes
- An interview with staff from the SCITT and Alliance schools
- A knowledge audit to ascertain your needs
- A written communication task
How school placements work
This is an employment based route therefore the suitable candidate must have a current role within a school/setting. Ideally the candidate will have worked for a minimum of two years within a support role linked to this subject areas.
A contrasting placement within a second setting is compulsory, and all trainees gain experience of both key stage 2 (upper primary) and Key stage 5 (post 16).
Face to face training takes place on Fridays. Whilst the majority of training takes place at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, some training will take place in partner schools across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Unqualified teacher salary
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
A UK degree of classification 2.2 or higher (we may consider experienced applicants with a 3rd class degree for a QTS only programme).
You should be able to demonstrate you have teaching experience within this subject area.

All applicant must have successfully completed the DfE professional skills tests prior to the course start.
