About the course
Put your career plans on a firm footing – with a PGCE, recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status, 60 credits at Masters level and most of the year spent on placement learning what it takes to become a great teacher. Our School Direct route provides the ideal combination of highly regarded qualifications and hands-on experience, giving you a strong career advantage.
As part of the course, you will undertake three fully assessed teaching placements, supported throughout by our trained school mentors and subject link tutors. You will also spend time at the University to help put your school experience in the context of educational policy, principles and evidence-based practice.
Alongside your two main teaching placements, you will have the chance to visit other schools and to work with children from different backgrounds. You will also focus on your subject specialism to improve your practice and will study school-related issues at Masters level.
You’ll study modules such as:
- Professional Practice and Pedagogy 1
- Professional Practice and Pedagogy 2
- Professional Practice and Pedagogy 3
- Understanding the Pupil as a Learner: Theories and Models of Learning and Teaching for Inclusive Professional Practice
- Developing Teacher Enquiry: Research Informed Practice
Whilst you will spend most of your time learning how to teach in your placement schools , you will also benefit from wider perspectives about teaching, learning and the educational landscape at the University. Working in our excellent facilities with University and other experts in the wider educational field, you will develop a deeper and more critical understanding of what it takes to become a highly effective teacher.
To supplement the University programme, each week you will attend CPD sessions at Blackfriars Teaching School where you will be taught by highly experienced tutors on a wide range of subjects pertinent to your stage in your career. These weekly sessions are also an excellent opportunity to network and share experiences with other trainees from schools in our alliance.
At a time when rapid policy shifts are transforming the educational landscape, we will help you to meet the challenge of change in the modern classroom. You will be taught by a highly competent and qualified team of tutors, including published authors and influential researchers whose work is helping to shape the future of the profession.
We select trainees who are able to demonstrate subject knowledge and who have shown through their experiences of engaging with educational establishments that they are able and committed to meet the challenges of a career in teaching. Candidates must meet all the entry requirements for the programme and demonstrate competence through the alliance's recruitment and selection procedures.
You will be invited to interview at your selected school wherever possible or one of our other schools within the Blackfriars Teaching School Alliance. There will be a written task, trial QTS tests may be given (dependent upon whether you have already passed them or not), a micro-teach (you will be provided with information before your interview so that you can fully prepare for this) and a formal interview. Perhaps the most important part of this interview is your interaction with a group of pupils (either in a classroom or group setting).

How school placements work
You will be recruited as a trainee and based mainly in one of our alliance schools. For this particular course programme, your main placement will be at The Coppice Academy, Newcastle-Under-Lyme with a shorter second placement at one of the mainstream schools in our consortium.
All of the schools in the Blackfriars Teaching School Alliance are incredibly experienced in welcoming and nurturing Trainee Teachers. From day one you will be made to feel part of the team and will be surrounded by passionate people who are dedicated to making a difference. As well as receiving excellent support from our mentors in school, all Trainee Teachers within the Blackfriars Teaching School partnership are offered a weekly CPDT Programme which supplements the University programme. These CPDT sessions offer Trainee Teachers the opportunity to learn from practitioners who are experts in their field and also allows time to share best practice and network.

Studying for a postgraduate degree is a good investment in your future, but you need to carefully consider how you’re going to pay for your course and your living costs.
Most students will be able to apply for loans and depending on where you live and your circumstances, bursaries and scholarships might also be available.
Our postgraduate degrees are competitively priced and all the essential equipment and activities are included.

The fees are slightly different depending on whether you normally live in the UK/EU or outside of the EU.
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £22,000
- a bursary of £20,000
With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £5,000 each in your third and fifth year of teaching (£7,500 in some areas of England).
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in maths or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support from the training provider
To pay for your tuition fees and living costs, you may be able to take out a student loan. These loans don’t usually need to be paid back until you have graduated and are earning a good salary.
Sometimes, bursaries and scholarships are also available - it depends on your circumstances and which country you usually live in. These don’t need to be paid back.

- An undergraduate honours degree (preferably 2:1) or equivalent in a relevant subject. You must be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of subject knowledge in your chosen subject curriculum specialism.
- GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Maths.
- Successfully completed the National College for Teaching and Leadership’s Skills Tests in literacy and numeracy.
- Several weeks of recent experience in a UK secondary school.
- A medical report which is deemed satisfactory.
- A completed DBS enhanced disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by the provider.
- Satisfactory references.
